Eric Majeski's (aka Netwolf) Camp Reports for LetsGoPens.com

Camp 2001 opens...

September 12, 2001

Not a whole lot to say about today's optional practice. They had been playing a pickup game for most of the session, but around 1:00 it began to slow down and only 1 goalie was out on the ice.

I never saw Mario Lemieux at all and Kevin Stevens never took to the ice. Most every other veteran did though, including Alexei Kovalev, Robert Lang, and Martin Straka. Also all three of the old guys attending on tryouts (Stephane Richer, Bob Errey, and Michel Petit) were there.

You can't really take too much away from an optional workout like this, but as I walked out of the rink two guys stood out in my head, for vastly different reasons.

Sebastien Caron looked absolutely awful. He looked nothing like the guy I remember watching the last two camps. He got beat on some very good shots, but believe me when I tell you he had an off day to say the least. Jason MacDonald put 5 or 6 past him. That's all you need to know.

Kris Beech on the other hand, looked pretty good. Nifty stickhandler, decent speed, agile... hopefully he carries that over to the scrimmages.

Also, Darius Kasparaitis was his usual loud, joking self at the practice. Maybe that gives some insight to his state of mind following his contract discussions, maybe not, but I thought I'd mention it.

Also, they resurfaced the ice about midway through the session. Most of the vets were out before and shortly after and the rookies came out about then as well. Most everyone that had been watching practice gathered in the Pro Shop during the break, watching the televisions in absolute silence.

netwolf believes that hockey is a great way to take your mind off of more serious things... even if its only for a few hours.
