Camp 2003, Sept. 19
September 19, 2003
First practice was Mario Lemieux, Martin Straka, Michel Ouellet, Nick Boucher and everyone who will play in Wheeling tonight. Based on practice, Edzo will be going with the following lineup:
Meloche-Eastwood-McKenna
Abid-Endicott-Bradley
Malone-Sivek-Armstrong
Koltsov-R. Fata-Kostopolous
Bissonnette-Berehowsky
Orpik-Scuderi
Rouleau-Robinson
Caron and Fleury were the other goalies. I believe the plan is to start Caron tonight and Fleury at home tomorrow. Ouellet skated the drills with Lemieux and Straka.
Edzo appeared to get hit with a puck while along the boards, but I could tell where it got him because the glass was all fogged up today. The drilled slowed down but Edzo yelled "let's go, let's go" and got them going again. Then he skated off to the corner hunched over. He ended up being okay though.
At one point during the 2-on-1s, Drake Berehowsky appeared to have an angle on Lemieux and tried to pinch him off at the blue line. Mario flipped a nifty backhand pass over his stick to Straka, who went in on the goalie all alone. Steve McKenna saw him Berehowsky get burned and let go of a loud "wooooo" from the other end. The look on Berehowsky's face was priceless.
Paul Bissonnette and Ramzi Abid got into each other a little bit during one of the drills. I didn't see who started it, but for a second it looked pretty intense.
Straka came back out for the second session as well. Andy Chiodo was not there. I don't know why.
At the end of practice, Lemieux kept setting up 5 or 6 pucks from various spots on the rink and taking rapid-fire slapshots on Marc-Andre Fleury. Although there was one set where Lemieux buried 2 in a row, Fleury won all of the battles. On one round where Lemieux was shooting from the leftwing face-off dot, Fleury went 7 for 7 - all of them saves. Each shot was on net. I hope to get video of these up later for everyone who hasn't seen Fleury in action yet.
Nothing really stood out from the second session.
Most of the drills today centered around breakouts. Edzo ran them through a variety of different ones.
The second stage of camp begins tonight in Wheeling.
