Pens beat Red Wings 4-3 in triple overtime (3-Jun-08)
Epic game! The Penguins remain alive with a 4-3 triple overtime victory in Game Five over the Red Wings in front of 20,066 at Joe Louis Arena. Pittsburgh had a 2-0 lead after one period on goals from Marian Hossa and Adam Hall.
The Wings cut the lead to 2-1 after two and then scored twice in the first half of the third period to seemingly clinch the Cup. The Pens pulled the goalie with one minute to go in their season and Max Talbot banged one home with 34.3 to go to send it to overtime.
Also, in the third Sergei Gonchar crashed into the boards and left the game and Ryan Malone took a puck in the face and re-broke his nose.
The Wings were all over the Pens in the first overtime outshooting them 13-2 but Marc-Andre Fleury was brilliant and was easily the game's number one star.
Petr Sykora told color analyst Pierre McGuire that he would score the game-winner. He ended up being correct as Sykora scored a power play goal at 9:57 of the third overtime to force a Game Six Wednesday at Mellon Arena.
Pens lose Game Four 2-1 (1-Jun-08)
The Penguins find themselves on the brink of elimination after losing Game Four 2-1 to the Wings in front of 17,132 at Mellon Arena. After a scoreless second, Jiri Hudler scored the game-winner at 2:26 of the third after the Penguins had chances to clear the puck from the zone. Pittsburgh had nearly a minute and a half of a two-man advantage near the midpoint of the third but were unable to convert.
Pens finally score and beat the Red Wings 3-2 (29-May-08)
The Penguins get two goals from Sidney Crosby and defeat the Red Wings 3-2 in Game Three of the Finals in front of a loud 17,132 at Mellon Arena. Crosby scored the first Pittsburgh goal of the series at 17:25 of the first period. After Detroit turned the puck over in their own end and Marian Hossa had his shot blocked, Crosby picked up the puck and pushed it one-time by Osgood.
Crosby made it 2-0 with a power play goal early in the second period. Crosby, at the side of the goal, again got a Hossa rebound and slid it by Osgood. Johan Franzen cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal at 14:48 of the second.
Adam Hall regained the two goal lead at 7:18 of the third. Shortly after Gary Roberts leveled a Wing in the corner, Hall banked a shot in off the back of Osgood from behind the net. Brooks Orpik fired up the crowd near the midpoint of the period with a shift in which he had four crushing hits in the span of 16 seconds. The Wings did not quit and Mikael Samuelsson made it 3-2 at 13:37 with a wrist shot from the edge of the right circle. Detroit had chances, including a power play with six minutes to go, but were unable to tie the game up.
