Penguins lose 5-4 in overtime to Canadiens (18-Nov-2002)
Pittsburgh scores twice in the third period to tie game but Montreal nets one in overtime for a 5-4 win. Eight of the game's nine goals were scored during special teams play with seven power play goals and one shorthanded goal. Dick Tarnstrom (PPG), Aleksey Morozov (PPG), Jan Hrdina (PPG) and Mario Lemieux (PPG) scored for the Pens. Josef Melichar left the game with 2:40 to go in the third with a shoulder injury. Pittsburgh is now winless in their last six games.

  • Dick Tarnstrom notted the game at one with a power play goal at 11:37. Tarnstrom, standing between the points, took a pass from Mario Lemieux and blasted a slapshot stick-side by a screened Jose Theodore.

  • Aleksey Morozov tied it at two with a power play goal at 6:49. Morozov took a pass from Lemieux, whirled to the net and beat Theodore short-side from the right-side of the goal.

  • The Canadiens had 1:56 of 5-on-3 advantage time just over the midpoint of the period when Marc Bergevin was off for tripping and then Jan Hrdina was also called for tripping.
  • Montreal cashed in on the two-man advantage 38 seconds later when Saku Koivu finished off his hat trick. Koivu took a cross-ice pass from Patrice Brisebois and shot the puck in off the inside of Hedberg's right leg from below the right circle.

  • Montreal found themselves with 1:31 of 5-on-3 advantage time at 15:23 as Dick Tarnstrom and then Kent Manderville were called for high-sticking.
  • Montreal cashed in again on a two-man advantage when Patrice Brisebois notched his third goal of the year at 16:25. Brisebois took a shot from the right point which Hedberg slowed down but the puck found its way into the net.

  • Jan Hrdina began the comeback in the third period with a power play goal at 2:22. Aleksey Morozov behind the net backhanded a pass out front to Hrdina who one-timed it home from in front.

  • The Penguins tied it at four with a Mario Lemieux power play goal at 11:11. Dick Tarnstrom took a shot from between the points which bounced off of Theodore and went in off of Lemieux's right skate as he cut to the net. The goal was reviewed and allowed to stand.

  • Josef Melichar left the game with 2:40 to go in the third period with what appeared to be a wrist/forearm injury but what the Pittsburgh papers this morning are calling a separated shoulder.

  • Shots after regulation were 33-24 in favor of Pittsburgh.
  • Donald Audette got the game-winner for the Canadiens at 1:12 of overtime. After a turnover in the defensive zone by Alexei Kovalev, Audette ended up with a breakaway and slid a shot five-hole past Hedberg.
