Pens lose second straight overtime game to Montreal (20-Nov-2002)
The Penguins lose 3-2 to the Canadiens in overtime and waste a strong goaltending effort from Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Jan Hrdina scored both Pittsburgh goals - the first on the power play in the 1st period and the second on a delayed penalty call in the 2nd period. Pens are now winless in their last 7 games. Attendance was a disappointing 13,549 at Mellon Arena.
  • Lines: Straka-Lemieux-Morozov, Hrdina-Robitaille-Kovalev, Daigle-Primeau-Nieminen and LaCouture-Manderville-Donovan.
  • Defensive pairings: Laukkanen-Tarnstrom, Bergevin-Moran and Jonsson-Pushor.
  • Goaltender: Jean-Sebastien Aubin
  • Captain: Mario Lemieux

  • Jan Hrdina gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead when he scored a power play goal at 13:39. Mario Lemieux took a shot from the left boards which hit Montreal goaltender, Jeff Hackett, popped up in the air at the left-side-side of the net and Hrdina batted it home.
    • Pittsburgh, Jan Hrdina 6 (power play) (Mario Lemieux, Dick Tarnstrom), 13:39
  • 1st period penalties: Pit, Jonsson, (Tripping) 4:38; Mon, Dykhuis, (Holding) 9:28; Mon, Petrov, (Tripping) 13:18.

    • Montreal, Yanic Perreault 9 (Doug Gilmour), 11:44
  • Montreal added a Richard Zednik power play goal 38 seconds later to grab a 2-1 lead. While Ian Moran was off for tripping, Zednik picked up a rebound of a Mike Ribeiro shot and knocked it in.
    • Montreal, Richard Zednik 9 (power play) (Mike Ribeiro, Donald Audette), 12:22
  • Jan Hrdina got his second of the game and seventh of the year on a delayed penalty call at 14:52. After a scramble out front, Hrdina ended up backhanding the puck past Hackett.

  • Shots after two were 20-16 in favor of Montreal.
  • There was no scoring in the third as both goaltenders came up with big saves to keep the game deadlocked at two. Aubin made several acrobatic saves and turned aside a 2-on-1 break with under a minute to go.
  • 3rd period penalties: No penalties.
  • Andrei Markov scored the overtime game-winner for the Canadiens. Markov picked up the puck in the offensive zone, put a move on Hans Jonsson (who dropped his stick in the process...) and wristed a shot over Aubin's left shoulder from the slot.
