Pens beat Flyers 3-2 in OT (subtitle: "Take that, Derrian Hatcher!") (16-Nov-2005)
The Penguins beat the Flyers 3-2 in overtime on a Sidney Crosby breakaway goal in front of 19,687 at Wachovia Center. The first period was all Philadelphia as Pittsburgh was outshot 11-4 but there was no scoring. The second was also scoreless and saw Derian Hatcher cheap-shot Sidney Crosby who left the game for repairs. Crosby returned with a fat lip and what appeared to be two chipped teeth only to then be slashed across the chest by Hatcher. Neither penalty was called.
Crosby extracted his first measure of revenge when he assisted on Ryan Malone's power play goal at 2:03 of the third. Crosby then made it 2-0 56 seconds later as he jammed a Ziggy Palffy chip in front past Flyers goaltender, Antero Niittymaki. Joni Pitkanen tied the game with two consecutive power play goals both set up by Peter Forsberg 1:34 apart.
Overtime was all Philadelphia until Ryan Malone sprung Crosby on a breakaway and Crosby made no mistake by firing it past Niittymaki stick-side for the victory. The shot was the Pens' only in overtime.
LetsGoPens.com Three Stars: 1) Sidney Crosby (2g, 1a), 2) Marc-Andre Fleury (45 saves), 3) Peter Forsberg (2a).
Jocelyn Thibault, who was scheduled to start, was hit in the throat in the pre-game skate. He was unable to play and Marc-Andre Fleury got the start. Thibault was on the bench for the first and then left the game to go to the hospital.
