The Pens get beat 4-1 by the Capitals in front of a mere 11,640 at Mellon Arena. Ex-Pens Jaromir Jagr and Robert Lang both scored goals for Washington. Mario Lemieux spoiled Olaf Kolzig's shutout bid with a goal at 17:07 of the third period. The Penguins were held to only 17 shots on goal by Washington's strong defensive play.

Washington opened a 1-0 lead at the 8:46 mark of the first with an Ivan Ciernik goal. Ken Klee took a shot from the right point and the save by Johan Hedberg rebounded into the slot where Ciernik banged it home stick-side.

Jaromir Jagr got the eventual game-winner for the Capitals at 13:10 with a nice individual effort. Jagr shrugged off a Pens defenseman, circled behind the net, threw the puck to the front of the net and it went in off of Marc Bergevin's skate at the far post.
