Koltsov returned to WBS (31-Jan-2003)
Konstantin Koltsov has been returned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. In two games with Pittsburgh, Koltsov had zero points, four shots on goal and a -2 +/- rating.

Pens fall to Caps 2-1 (30-Jan-2003)
The Penguins lose 2-1 to Capitals as ex-Pen Kip Miller gets a goal and assist. Pittsburgh opened the scoring at 12:38 of the first with a Michal Rozsival one-timer. Sergei Gonchar tied it at one at 1:21 of the second period and Kip Miller netted the game-winner at 11:31 of the third. Mario Lemieux has decided to skip this year's All-Star game due to his injured groin. Lemieux also will miss tonight's game against the Islanders and Thursday's game against the Capitals.

Konstantin recalled; Kostopoulos sent down (27-Jan-2003)
The Penguins have recalled F Konstantin Koltsov from Wilkes-Barre Scranton and have returned F Tom Kostopoulos to WBS. Koltsov, a 1999 first round draft pick, has 19 points (6g, 13a) in 38 games for WBS.

Pens beat Blackhawks 5-3; Kovalev nets hat trick (25-Jan-2003)
Alexei Kovalev broke out of his goal-scoring slump in a big way with a hat trick in Pittsburgh's 5-3 victory over the Blackhawks. Kovalev scored the first two Pens goals and also finished off the scoring. The hat trick was Kovalev's first of the season, 10th of his career and Pittsburgh's first by any player this season. The Penguins were beaten 4-1 by Boston in front of 13,271 at Mellon Arena. Milan Kraft scored his seventh of the season and the lone Pens goal near the midpoint of the first period. Pittsburgh, again playing without Mario Lemieux, went 0-7 on the power play. ... Read more

Pens and Sabres skate to 0-0 tie (21-Jan-2003)
Sebastien Caron stopped all 34 shots he faced and Buffalo's Martin Biron stopped all 23 he faced as Pittsburgh and Buffalo ended up in a 0-0 tie. The 0-0 tie was the 13th in Pittsburgh history and the first since November 7, 1998 (coincidentally, my wedding date). The Penguins finish off their five game road trip and earn seven points out of a possible ten total.

Penguins blanked by Panthers 3-0 (18-Jan-2003)
Pittsburgh's three game winning streak is snapped with a 3-0 loss to Florida. The Panthers scored twice in the second and once in the third to beat the Pens. Roberto Luongo made 35 saves for the shut out.

Penguins beat Lightning 3-2 (17-Jan-2003)
The Pens beat Tampa Bay 3-2 for their third straight win on their six game road trip. Wayne Primeau beat Lightning goaltender (and Penguin-killer), John Grahame, to a loose puck out front and scored the lone goal of the first period at 4:01. Alexei Kovalev made it 2-0 Pittsburgh at 8:08 of the second with a wrist shot from the blue line which beat Grahame five-hole. Tough-guy Andre Roy got Tampa Bay on the board at 11:34. Milan Kraft finished off a tremendous Martin Straka move and pass at 16:55 of the second to give the Pens a two-goal advantage heading to the third period. The lone goal of the third was scored by Vincent Lecavalier at 9:02 but the Lightning were unable to get the game-tying goal. Sebastien Caron's streak of being the game's number one star ended - he was the game's second star after stopping 29 of 31 shots.

Pens shut out Hurricanes 2-0 (15-Jan-2003)
The Penguins score a power play goal in the first and an empty-netter late to beat Carolina 2-0. Sebastien Caron making his second NHL start earns his first NHL shut out by stopping all 26 shots he faced. Martin Straka picked up a rebound of a Dick Tarnstrom shot on the power play and scored with a high shot at 8:54. After pressure from the Hurricanes with their goaltender pulled, Kent Manderville scored an empty-netter with 2 seconds remaining in the game. Caron, for the second straight game, was named the game's number one star.

Pens win 2-1 in Caron's first NHL start (13-Jan-2003)
Sebastien Caron turns aside 31 of 32 shots in his first NHL start and the Pens beat the Bruins 2-1 in Boston. Shean Donovan opened the scoring at 5:28 of the first period off a Boston turnover but Mike Knuble tied it up at 11:47. There was no scoring in the second as Caron stopped 15 shots in the period. Jan Hrdina netted the game-winner off a nice Alexei Kovalev set-up at 14:02 of the third. Caron was named the game's number one star. Mario Lemieux dressed but only played 3:53 before leaving the game after the first intermission.... Read more

Pens lose 3-1 to Rangers (11-Jan-2003)
The Penguins give up 3 goals in the first and end up losing 3-1 to New York. Jean-Sebastien Aubin gave up 3 goals on 11 shots in the first period and was replaced by Sebastien Caron who stopped all 18 shots he faced in the second and third periods. Martin Straka scored the lone Pens goal at 13:41 of the third.

Pens fall to Leafs 4-2 (9-Jan-2003)
The Penguins were down 2-0, tied it at two in the second period but end up losing 4-2 to Toronto. Shean Donovan (6:59 - 2nd) and Steve McKenna (pp 6:59 - 2nd) score for the Pens. Pittsburgh go 1 for 9 on the power play in front of 13,889 at Mellon Arena.... Read more

The Penguins have recalled RW Tom Kostopoulos from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Kostopoulos leads the WBS Pens in in goals (13), assists (22), points (35) and is tied for first with six power-play goals.

Hedberg out indefinitely (8-Jan-2003)
TSN is reporting that G Johan Hedberg is out indefinitely with a fractured clavicle.

ESPN reporting Barrasso to sign with Pens (8-Jan-2003)
ESPN is reporting that G Tom Barrasso will sign with the Penguins this week and then promptly retire.

Pens lose 6-3 to Islanders; Lemieux injured (7-Jan-2003)
The Islanders score four times in the second period on their way to a 6-3 victory over Pittsburgh. The pre-game news was the Dick Tarnstrom (hamstring), Jan Hrdina (back) and Johan Hedberg (shoulder) would not dress for the game. Sebastien Caron was recalled from WBS to back up Jean-Sebastien Aubin. Mario Lemieux left the game seven and a half minutes into the second period with a reported groin injury. Mario Lemieux (2:14 - 2nd per. PPG), Steve McKenna (19:55 - 2nd) and Ville Nieminen (14:57 - 3rd) scored for the Pens.... Read more

Pens recall Caron from WBS (7-Jan-2003)
The Penguins have recalled G Sebastien Caron from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Goaltender Johan Hedberg is day to day after re-aggravating a shoulder injury.

Pens beat Islanders 3-2 in overtime (4-Jan-2003)
The Penguins beat the Isles with a Martin Straka goal 42 seconds into overtime. Pittsburgh got goals from Mario Lemieux and Michal Sivek in the first period. New York responded with two in the second period. Johan Hedberg earned his 12th win of the season with a 26 save performance. The win was the Pens' first in overtime.

Pens beat Thrashers 4-1 (3-Jan-2003)
The Penguins score three third period goals to beat Atlanta 4-1. The Thrashers led 1-0 after the first with a Marc Savard goal at 15:22. Martin Straka tied it with a goal at 4:33 of the second. Pittsburgh then got goals from Steve McKenna (2:41 3rd per.), Dick Tarnstrom (5:18 3rd per.) and an empty-netter from Shean Donovan (19:32 3rd per.). Jean-Sebastien Aubin made 23 saves for his fifth win of the year.
