Engelland apparently called up

Postby ShipHockey7 on Sat Nov 07, 2009 1:22 am

A personnel note first: Noticed Deryk Engelland receiving congratulations in the locker room after tonight's game. I was talking to Ryan Bayda at the time, and by the time that conversation was over, Engelland was out the door. The only time a hockey player receives congratulations is if he's called up or his wife had a baby. I hadn't heard anything about Mrs. Engelland expecting, so ... Anyway, it was confirmed a short time later that Engelland has in fact been called up. I don't know, however, who he will be filling in for, if anyone.

dressing 7 in San Jose? Just to carry an extra d-man? Skoula was our seventh and with the Gonchar injury, we don't have any extras, seems a little late on the roadtrip though.

Probably just a precaution. Let's hope GoGo doesn't miss time. I'd say he's been our best player the last few weeks. It's gonna be really tough to beat the Sharks who have been on fire recently with Malkin, Gonchar, Talbot and possibly TK all missing again.

I'd rather him be rested periodically throughout the season then hit the wall in March like Malkin did his first year.

That's a good point. He's really been firing on all cylinders, and the grind of an NHL season (plus playoffs) is definitely something that you need to get acclimated to. Gonchar back and cutting down on Gogo's minutes will be a big help as well.

All the more reason to perhaps cheer against Gogo playing for team USA this winter - which I'm starting to see speculated. I hate to cheer against any of our boys having success at any level, but in this case I think he could use the rest, and he'll get another chance in 2014 if NHLers play.

Good for Eggy...he's toiled in the 'A' for years. Hope he suits up for a game or two.

Playing in the Olympics would only help his further development, so there really is no reason to cheer against it.

Why root against something that would be a great opportunity to develop and compete against the very best players in the world and represent USA?

Engelland is more of a defensive defenseman. I wonder if they are looking for more of a shut down pairing. Then again, he may never see the ice - it may be a precaution in case someone is sick or injured.

Following quote from Pens website.

"Penguins defenseman Alex Goligoski participated in the team's Saturday morning skate although his status for the game is uncertain. The Penguins recalled blueliner Deryk Engelland from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in case Goligoski cannot go. "

True, though I'm not as worried about as I would be for an NCAA or Euro League transfer. Those guys crash like Thornton on Xanax.

I'm not convinced it could get worse.
