ZAR-Crosby-Sprong would be an interesting line combo next year. ZAR and Crosby play a good enough defensive game to make up for any Sprong deficiencies (which have yet to really be seen at the NHL level).

This means that Phaneuf can lose to the Pens two games in a row.

Else, I have no idea what the hell he was up to there. That was a clear hook, then he took a swing at McCormick, then skated over to trade blows...

Something to prove?

Got himself out of that game as well. Not that there was much left of it :D

Does that trade help either team? Seems more like shuffling the decks on the titanic.

Ottawa gets the older, more brittle player in Gaborik. Not sure what Ottawa is thinking by making this move.

Cap space? Otherwise, I don't see the reasoning. I doubt they can move Gaborik.

Checking capfriendly, if they get anything in cap space it's minimal, so even cap space isn't the reason.

From what I am told from a number of Sens fans, they save about $5 mil in "real money." Whatever that means. From what I can gather, it adds up to about $275K in Cap savings. So, IDK.

Something I didn't know until I looked it up this week, is that when you retain salary, you retain cap hit, real salary, and bonuses. So, if Ottawa gets 25% of Phaneuf's cap hit against their cap, Ottawa still pays 25% of the actual salary owned to Phaneuf, and Ottawa is still responsible for 25% of any bonuses Phaneuf earns.

This really isn't about cap hit. Phaneuf had 7M cap hit. Gaborik is 4.875M cap hit. With 1.75M retained on Phaneuf, it is only a cap savings of 375K a year for Ottawa. HOWEVER, the actual salary (not cap hit) is much different on the two contracts. Taking out the rest of this year for simplicity, Phaneuf was due 5.5M, 5.5M, and 3M in actual salary for the next 3 years. 14M total. Gaborik's salary the next 3 years 4.575M, 3.175M, and 3.075M. 10.825M in total. But when you add what they still owe to Phaneuf by paying 25% of his salary, in the end they are paying more, well over 15M.

The only thing I can think of is teams may be responsible for performance bonuses on retained salary, but maybe not signing bonuses. Phaneuf has exactly 5.5M in signing bonuses (1M this year plus next 2 years, 2.5M final year of contract). That would be the only thing that makes sense.

Ottawa's retained cap hit on Phaneuf of $1.6 M keeps him as their third costliest defenseman.

Eugene ends up paying $17 M instead of about $26.5. And I guess less if Gaborik gets injured.

During the game, i told my kid that he probably had Phaneuf of the Sens. It's a bad pun game that we play during the games. And when I say we, I really just mean me, he just doesn't appreciate my bad puns ha. (he also gave  when I told him that Ceci put some extra cheese on his last shot)

I think the Kings are responsible for all bonuses, so it looks like a $5M savings in real money to the Sens. Plus the Sens can buy out Gaborik.

A buyout would result in 6 years of dead cap space ($1.5M, $3M, $3M, $1.2M, $1.2M, $1.2M). Buyouts are not something that a team that actually wants to try to win should do.

A trade to save money?

If you ask Eugene what he's doing he'll say "Nutting."

I agree with your math but apparently TSN and ESPN know something we don't, though TSN says 5.5M saved by Sens and ESPN says 4M. Yeah, OK.

Here's what TSN is saying:
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/leafs-it-c ... ry~1326080
But a deeper dive into the numbers reveals that the Senators will save approximately $5.5 million (US) in real cash between now and 2021 as a result of the transaction – even factoring in the money retained on Phaneuf.

ESPN:
http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/2242 ... a-senators
The trade will end up saving the Senators nearly $4 million, as Gaborik makes less money in base salary than Phaneuf through the duration of their contracts through 2021.

Ownership has no interest in spending to the cap anyway. Besides, why bother when you play the way they play?
