sergei gonchar

Postby penny lane on Wed Mar 08, 2006 9:58 am

tuesday night I did not hear boos or whatever for Sergei Gonchar.
rightly or wrongly he's here to quarterback PP and not much else
on defense so all season it is the PP that I judge him on.
The Ice-time program wrote about what some have been saying.
Sergei is the 4th highest scoring defenseman in the NHL since January.

All season people have given different explanations as to what ails
Sergei. To me I never considered him a stand-alone elite
offensive defenseman.
With the CAPS he was in the right spot, it was a team strong in total
team defense except for Gonchar...hatcher...iafrate...going way back.
Sergei will produce points when everybody else around him is producing.
Plus, in DC Sergei probably had more coaching.

I truly dislike the "i hate the yinzers" catch phrase. You drop Sergei , playing as he is today, on any team and you really think fan reaction would be different?

As he's on the 5 year plan I will be cheering for Gonchar to find his groove. he has the stamina to play beaucoup minutes and he shoots the puck just have to get his feet moving better/faster.

I feel the same way penny.... if someone feels this way... they can leave Pittsburgh. Go to Cleveland, there aren't an Yinzers there.

Even with all the complaining about Gonchar, and his bonehead plays sometimes, I still do not mind having him on this team. Don't get me wrong, if we could get a goal scorer for him i would do it right now, but I like having somone on D that can put up points.

Besides, who would replace him, Corey Cross, or some other average defenseman we have. At least Gonchar has the capability to make good plays and put up points.

p.s. Eric Cairns should be in the lineup every game. No reason why he isnt seeing normal ice time.

In his last eleven games, Gonchar has one goal and 15 assists. Without putting TOO much stock in this one, he's also a +5 over the span. That's pretty incredible when you figure that over the last eleven games the Pens have...

1. won only twice (both over the Craps - an 8-1 win when he had 3 assists and was a +1 and a 6-3 win when he had 1G, 3A and was a +2),

2. been outscored in other eight games by a score of 47-25.

I guess all he needed was a Russian transcript of the new rules. :)

He's finally figured out how to play with an injured shoulder.

Maybe they should get him to give Ziggy a call. :-)

As a 31 year old he is probably starting an inevitable career decline. The $$$ and term of his contract are ridiculous. All the Dmen that make more $$ than him are competent in all 3 zones, not just 1. He is only making $3.5M this season. The signing will look worse when he is making $6.5 in a few seasons. The signing will look idiotic when his Cap value is $5M in the 09/10 season when he is even more feeble at 36.

Having an injured shoulder doesn't explain:

-why he has been skating so damn slow recently
-why he's been this bad 95% of the season
-why he constantly makes bad decisions with the puck
