Bobby Goepfert Update

Postby Mad City Mike on Wed Mar 08, 2006 10:54 am

Last weekend, Goepfert and his St. Cloud State team took on the Badgers here in Madison. I didn't go to either game, but watched most of both on TV. Two different boradcast crews did the two games, but they were both Badger announcing teams. Both had nothing but good things to say about Goepfert. he is having a tremendous year, and might be named first team all-conference goalie. He is basically the key to that team, which plays a pretty defensive style.

He has a 2.06 GAA (second in the conference) and and .926 save percentage (third).

He is very sound positionally. He also "absorbs" the puck (in other words, not many rebounds). He was tremendous Friday night in a 1-0 loss. On Saturday, he gave up 1 horrendous goal from the opposite blueline, but was otherwise solid in a 3-1 loss. The one issue is his size. he looked rather small in net, so I looked it up. He is only 5'10", 170. At that size, I doubt he will make it in the NHL. Are there any goalies that small anymore?

Hey. lay off Manny

Manny's a hoot, my season tickets were in A-12, right next to the visitors runway, just three rows off the ice. Manny, as many backup goalies do, used to stand at the gate for the entire game. He was a hoot. We traded barbs and jabs all game long one night. The guy is good, he's VERY quick witted. He also had great sense of humor and wasn't offended in the least, in fact, he seemed to enjoy the exchange.

That night I became a Lagace fan.

I'll grant you that. But Legace is pretty athletic, and I didn't see that in Goefert. He looked more like a solid positional guy to me, and I'm not sure you can be that small and play that style in the NHL.

From what I remember, he was more athletic than positional at Providence. He has a quick feet and a quick glove.
