March 21st game moved to OLN

Postby Admin on Wed Mar 15, 2006 4:46 pm

The Penguins-Senators game at Ottawa on Tuesday, March 21 will be televised nationally by OLN.

The game originally had been scheduled to air locally on FSN Pittsburgh. But now it becomes an exclusive national broadcast on OLN.

This marks the eighth time this season that the Penguins will appear on OLN.

Dear god. We're stuck with OLN for THREE Years?

It's not even part of the standard cable package here on Long Island and that's one of the largest, if not THE largest, hockey market in the nation.

Wondering if the Option is the NHL's or OLN's?

I think it was a 2 year deal with options on both sides for 4 more seasons:

http://cbs.sportsline.com/nhl/story/8745707

The NHL recently hired John Shannon from Leafs TV (also former producer of HNIC) as the NHL Senior VP of Broadcasting. According to some scuttlebutt he will be tasked with helping OLN improve their product as well as helping Comcast create the US NHL Network.

I got three + OLN option three from http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/in ... ureId=1694

It also says "Either party can end the deal after two years."

Funny funny quote from that article.

" ESPN contended that the value of NHL games had dropped substantially following the lockout that wiped out all of last season.

"We worked very hard to build and sustain our relationship with the league and would have liked to continue," George Bodenheimer, the president of ESPN, Inc. and ABC Sports said in a statement late Wednesday night. "However, given the prolonged work stoppage and the league's TV ratings history, no financial model even remotely supports the contract terms offered. We wish the NHL all the best."

Guess George was wrong eh? Bet he'd like a mulligan on that decision.
There's no doubt in my mind that next year, the NHL wil draw an even wider audiance when young stars like Crosby, AO and Malkin make the playoffs (God willing)

I had not read the spillover network provision regarding the playoffs before. It won't matter to people with Center Ice, but I wonder how OLN/Comcast will be able to handle the 5 games per night the NHL puts up sometimes in the playoffs. I'm sure they will use Comcast online for some additional distribution. I also assume OLN has some kind of repetitive primetime schedule most nights that the NHL playoffs will disrupt. I know the NHL ratings are nigher than the sub-microscopic ratings they get for their granola programming, but they will cannibalize their core audience if they discard the granola for 8 weeks of hockey on almost every night.

What a mistake it was to put hockey on the Ted Nugent/Survivor rerun channel. The NHL must get out of that contract in 07.

all of these technologies have us by the throats. I ended up getting digital cable, so I could watch the OLN games....the basically while I was in the middle of the purchase, I decided to just flip and get the CenterIce package, too. it's nice, but my digital box is crap. the other night I was settled in and ready to watch the late san jose game and the thing pooped out and my digital channels wouldn't come up. calling and unplugging didn't help, so they're bringing me a new box tomorrow. it's garbage. I'm paying for this crap, drop the box off as soon as you can, but hey...

at least barry melrose isn't on OLN, right?
