Kessel vs. Johnson - who to take if your the Pens???

Postby kovyman1127 on Sat Mar 18, 2006 1:24 am

Ok...upsides to each player as we know....

I'm thinking that we could get more "in return" if we took Kessel and traded his rights for IMMEDIATE needs (i.e. scoring winger, D-man to compliment Gonchar, etc).

I like Jordan Staal, he is a big forward with a can't miss work ethic. Judging by all the high praise he and his brothers are getting by scouts everywhere I gather that he is going to be a good all around player and could be an ideal winger on the top 2 lines.

Staal is probably going to be drafted 4th or 5th so trading down that far and picking up another decent player would be smart. Kessel would get more in return than Johnson would because goals put asses in seats and everyone of the leagues worst except us need alot of help at center.

Either that or draft Johnson.

johnson.

We got blue chips up front and in net. We need a stud on the blueline. Whitney, Welch and Goligoski all will be good. I believe I read from Woodlief, that he is the best dman in 5 seasons.

If they can't get Johnson, Backstrom.

Phil Kessel

The guy has breakaway speed with finishing capability (I'm looking at you Koltsov).

I don't know why people are even thinking about trading this pick. It's not like this team is one player away from turing into a playoff contender.

Bäckström
He is the best player in the draft. :D

I like Staal too if we end up in that 4 or 5 range. 1 or 2 though there shouldn't be any question. Kessel or Johnson. I think it's pretty unlikely we'll win the lottery again so I think the choice will be pretty easy......that is whoever is left at #2.

I think it's mostly becuase while Johnson and Kessel are good prospects they aren't on the level of Ovechkin, Malkin, or Crosby. If there was a player like that availble, there would be no trade talk.

FWIW, I am leaning towards Erik Johnson. No real reason why...

I did not knew I had so much power.
But honestly, I have seen him play live couple of times and many times on TV. And from what I have seen from clips from Kessel then I go with Bäckström.
I know I cant compare watching a guy live and watching a few clips but heey, I will 8)

I agree with Netwolf, go with Johnson. We have to stud forwards and a goalie in our mix. Can't have enough good defensive prospects in the system. Look at how many defensmen were traded at the wire. If nothing else bargaining chips.

I think the picture will become clearer after the NCAA tourney and the U18 championship. I thought Kessel showed a much more well rounded game last night. It will be interesting to see how he plays as the stakes go up. If he can dominate in the NCAA tourney when the competition and pressure are the highest it certainly will elevate his status.

It will be interesting to see if Johnson can dominate the U18 championships as Kessel did last season. He was always rated highly, but really elevated his status with his play at the U20 championships. If he can follow that up with a dominant U18 championship it could cement his status as the top ranked prospect.

I am leaning towards Kessel, or anyone else that can make an offensive impact. We need people that can score goals more than anything, even defenseman.

I'd take Johnson, we have plenty of guys to do the scoring up front...we need some help on the D.

Somehow I can see a puck hog battle between Crosby, Malkin, and Kessel if we took him.

Who cares. Maybe they should pick someone under the radar. Geez.
