This thread is nonsensical. The boys in the room aren't going out on the ice to finish in last place so whatever is posted in this thread will have no bearing on whether or not the Pens finish in last place.

The ~ 7,500 Pens fans there last night weren't rooting for the Pens to lose. Too bad there aren't more Pens fans that actually care to show up support the team financially. That said, I was there last night and while it was frustrating to lose on home ice with Hogtown fans taking over half the Igloo, in the clear light of the following day the loss last night looks more beneficial to the Pens long term future than a meaningless win would have been.

The boys showed up last night and played hard for 60 minutes. That is all a fan can ask.

Announced attendance during one of the blackouts was 15,575 I believe.

There were over 15K total, but ~ 50% IMO were wearing Hogtown sweaters. The GoLeafsGo chant never dominated the Igloo, but Maple Leaf nation did erupt with a loud ovation on Kilger's goal.

Considering the overwhelming amount of flotsam playing for the Penguins at the moment (honestly, how many players on the current roster are sure-fire keepers? Crosby, Fleury and Whitney are-who else?), I believe the value of "winning now" and "meshing as a team" is grossly over-estimated. And if Fleury's long-term confidence is actually predicated upon a few more meaningless victories this season, uh, I won't want him between the pipes when the Penguins actually play meaningful games again...

In addition, I am of the mind that the difference in player-caliber between Kessel and Johnson and the rest of the field is substantial enough to prefer a last-place finish rather than two or three more victories (though I cannot ever actually root AGAINST the Penguins or hope they lose, regardless of the potential payoff...)

The players will always play to win, as they should, but don't lose your head and think winning any more games this year will magically give the team some "killer instinct"... you will just shaft yourself out of a very possible franchise player.

Screw the battle, win the war.

I do believe if the Pens had won 1 more game that year Washington would have finished last and we wouldd have finished 2nd to last and won the draft lottery, so you are right, we wouldnt own Malkin's rights. We would have Ovechkin playing on a wing with Crosby.

If we had won the lottery in 2004, more than likely we wouldn't have landed Crosby as well. We would have had only 2 balls in the lottery, not three. As much as I like Ovechkin and still wish he was a Pen, I would rather have Malkin AND Crosby than just Ovechkin and whatever pick we would have ended up with in last years draft.

Johnson may be getting a bit of separation from Kessel. McKeens moved him up to #1 yesterday and actually moved Staal to #2 and Kessel to #3. They claim all 3 have risen in their estimation since January, but Johnson & Staal have risen more. They did note Kessel's team play and defense have improved lately. McKenzie and RLR still have Johnson #1, Kessel #2, and Toews #3.

McKeens is convinced Johnson has a strong mean streak and also can be a puck rushing defensemen. He is huge, skates well, and outplayed Jack at the WJC. I'm starting to lean towards Johnson, but the U18 Championships, NCAA playoffs, and CHL playoffs will go a long way in writing the final chapter.

They can just draft one in Johnson. Of course, he probably will take a few seasons to join the team...
