Who Is Back Next year?

Postby Mad City Mike on Thu Mar 23, 2006 12:49 pm

Looking ahead to next season (after all, what else is there to do?), let’s play a game of who we want and who we don’t. I have separated the Pens into three categories:

Can’t Live Without ‘Em (guys you definitely want back)
Stuck in the Middle (guys you are undecided or ambivalent about)
Outta Here (guys you want no part of).

Using RJ’s roster, here is what I come up with. Remember, this is not what I am saying will happen, just what I want to happen.

Can’t Live Without ‘Em
Crosby-the franchise
Whitney-stud d-men are hard to find
Orpik-precariously close to stuck in the middle
Fleury-getting better and better
Armstrong-love his style
Roy-he’s growing on me, though not worth the salary

Stuck in the Middle
Hilbert-has showed some flashes
Malone-can he give a consistent effort?
Boguniecki-I like his spunk
Koltsov-worthless offensively
Rita-inclined to let him go
Surovy-not sure if he can be a player
Ouellet-ditto
Scuderi-solid in own end

Outta Here
LeClair-waste of money, poor leader
Nordgren-worthless
Murley-no use for him
VandenBussche-bye bye
Odelein-happy retirement
Nasreddine-not NHL caliber
Cairns-too slow to be a useful d-man
Gonchar-waste of money
Melichar-he just isn’t good
Caron-might be worst backup in league
Thibault-pathetic

Gonchar will be here because he is worth the money.

Roy and Thibault will be here simply because no one will take their contracts.

Boguniecki will be here because he one of the best bang for the buck in the lineup right now.

Ok, i'll give it a wack...

Keepers:
Crosby
Fleury
Whitney
Orpik (not 100% he should be on this list)

Mid-level: would be most of present team.
Armstrong: Keeper but not untouchable
Malone: hated on this board, but to much talent to give up on
Hilbert: sign him for cheap, give him a shot
Rita: not top 2 line talent imo
Surovy: see rita
Kolstov: solid 4th liner PK, keep him
Oulette: Reminds me of Luc Robitaille, soft hands, kind of vanishes, need more from him. But he's a young sniper. most nights.
Roy: 4th liner, need him now.
Scuderi: Quietly goes about his business. I would keep him next season
Gonchar: He'll be fine, needs structure. plus, he's not going anywhere.
Cairns: May be good to have for a 7th d spot against the flyers.
Melichar: Like 6th-7th D man.
Nordgren: to soon to give up on him

Fringe:
Bouginecki: probably thinks he's better then he is.
LeClair: should be moved
RVB: gone
Thibault: if he gets healthy, could still be good
Caron: should be better.
Nassardine: AHL
Murley: AHL
Odelein: retire

The team needs top 6 talent. Hopefully Malkin is one and a strong goal scoring winger is a must for sid. NOT RECCHI

Gonchar must go, at any cost.

Orpik can go. He's not well-suited for the new NHL.

Not impressed with Ouellet. Has been MIA for 2 months now.

Either Caron or Tbo will leave, I really don't care which.

Hopefully a new winger is acquired so Surovy can get back to being a career AHLer.

Melichar out. Welsh in.

Of course this is all a dream. The roster will change very little over the summer.

I'm only doing a "keep" list:

Crosby
Fleury
Armstrong
Whitney
Orpik
Gonchar (for obvious reasons)

I really don't care about the rest.

He is using that the Pens are knocking on the door of going under the minimum cap and therefore need to keep Gonchar's $5.5m to stay above that.

Jim is right. If the Penguins trade Gonchar, they either have to acquire some salary in return or sign some free agents. We can't discount the fact the NHL salary cap could jump to $29 million.

Excellent list MCM. My list looks almost exactly like yours except I would move Nas and Cairns up one notch. Nas' lack of footspeed has been exploited the past few games but he competes 100% of the time and plays with an attitude the rest of the Dmen don't have. I also kind of like Cairns as a mostly scratched nuclear deterrent. He took a million shots to the skull from Chara the other night without flinching. That has to count for something.

I think we should keep Koltsov. If we're going to be stuck with Thibault again, we need somebody to fire pucks at his head in practice.

So Konstantin Koltsov can be "offensive"

Koltsov or Kozlov as B Errey calls him, had done a good job
on the PK. Realizing that Ottawa is in a different class and was
facing Caron.

If I hear one more time that J LeClair has never missed the
play-offs... He can always volunteer for the flyers.

Don't forget some guys in WBS as well. Talbot definately makes my team and I'd try to find a spot for Christensen and Welch as well.

The only untouchables are Crosby and Fleury right now. Everyone else could be moved if the deal was good but those two I would not trade for anything because the return will not be as good for us in the long term or even the short term with the way Fleury has been playing lately.

I'm all for keeping Koltsov. His has been our best guy on the PK, and has almost drawn a penalty a game.

With the speed he has, could you imagine the damage he'd do if someone taught him how to shoot/pass?

Watching Ryan Malone this year, I believe he's just going through a tough sophmore Jinx type season.

I'm convinced that next year he'll return to and exceed last years form.

Most of our (or atleast my) opinions of him were formed from the first half of the season undeer Edzo, he's begun to turn it around under MT.

I know my opinion isn't popular. But he looks like a guy that may have relaxed last year in the off-season to enjoy his success instead of work on building on it.

I'm sure he won't make that same mistake this year.

Amen brother!! How in the world people want to give up on this kid is beyond me. He needs at least another year before we should risk a move we may regret for a long time. We are not going to contend for a while, so why we would dump a guy who has proven he can score at this level?

If Malone was stunting the development of some other great prospect, then move him out, but where are the prospects in the organization that have scored 22 goals in their first NHL season, and may get 20 in their second?

It's silly.

Malone, Armstrong, Crosby, Whitney, Orpik, Welch, Gonchar, Fluery and possibly Ouellet need to be given time. Nothing we would acquire for them would be any greater than the potential they possess. I keep Ouellet only to see if he can be a trigger man for Malkin's wing next season the way that Armstrong has settled in to Crosby's wing.

In my mind Ouellet has a knack around the net, and the thing he has lacked is enough depth at Center to have a true setup guy to play with every night. His skating is not great, but a guy with 14 goals in 37 games is not someone to toss aside yet. Especially with the great Russian coming next year.

Gonchar has been playing pretty well lately. He's going to be a big part of next season with Malkin and Crosby on the PP.
