Makes sense. Nasredinne down, Cairns suspended. That leaves five defensemen, right?

Got an e-mail from Wilkes-Barre about the call up.

WILKES-BARRE , PA - The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Noah Welch from loan to the Wilkes-Barre/sCranton Penguins, it was announced today by general manager Craig Patrick.

Additionally, center Kurtis McLean has been returned to the Wheeling Nailers (ECHL) on loan.

Welch, 23, has appeared in all 68 of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's games this season, recording 26 points (9+27), 81 penalty minutes and a plus-12 rating during his first professional campaign. The 6-4, 215 pound native of Brighton, MA, was voted a starter for the PlanetUSA All-Stars at the 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic.

Pittsburgh 's second round choice (54th overall) in the 2001 Entry Draft, Welch played four seasons at Harvard University, recording 75 points (23+52) in 128 career games. He is the Crimson's all-time leader in penalties (131) and penalty minutes (270).

McLean , 25, has appeared in 27 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, recording 12 points (3+9) and a plus-5 rating.

The 5-11, 175 pound native of Kirkland Lake, Ontario began the season with the Nailers, and has recorded 46 points (25+21) and a plus-20 rating in 36 games with Wheeling this season.

McLean was signed by the Penguins as a free agent on Sept. 29, 2005.

It's official then! Image

Too bad I won't be able to watch the game.

It's my girlfriend's mother's birthday tonight.

I might be able to catch the 3rd period.

Its a good move. Bring them up and see what they can do. Then send them back down and win the Calder Cup.

And even if they were, so? I can't think of a better situation to have Welch play in. If he screws up no one will really care. The season is lost, if he has some rookie mistakes tonight, as long as he learns from them, that's fine. Welch has been one of the best players on WBS all year and he's earned this. And I still say Nas was returned because his waiver exeemption was coming to a close.

He's pretty young in terms of games played in the NHL.

That would make him 0 years old.

I totally agree with you, I just figured there'd be some major backlash for this and people would freak out and starting yelling about "proper development".

Let the kid play a few games, what can it hurt?

After all, this is the future of the team.

wow, thats 2 pretty decent decisions that CP made in the past 2 weeks. bringing up Naseredine(sp?) and Welch. It was only about 4 months too late.

Ive never seen the kid play, but from what everyone has said on here and what ive heard from websites, he is a helluva player.

Going by CP's legacy, as soon as he shows signs of brilliance, he will be back to the minors and never be heard from again

He instantly becomes the best defensive defenseman on the team.

Honestly, some nights you could put a trash can on the ice and it would be the best defensive defenseman out there. I just hope Welch is better than that. :)

Don't knock trashcans... I haven't been able to get even ONE of them to fall for my patented 'deek'. :-)

I can't wait to hear someone say he doesn't have the 'mental toughness' to survive if he has a poor showing right out of the gate.

Good move by CP... give these kids a taste before this season is over, and maybe they work even harder in the off-season and come to camp determined to stick with the 'big club'

It's about time. He's earned a look. Even if he bombs out (and I don't think he will), I will still say it was a good idea.
