I watched the uncut interview/conference on kdka.com. The only thing I didn't like was that he only talked about the Pens and them being saved. He did mention the Lower Hill development, but very little. He should talk that up more to because he will win the support of non hockey fans. If he turns the IOC bid into only "Saves the Pens" then it is bad in the eyes of the public. On a seperate note, Ken Sawyer said 11 more politicans joined in the support. I posted the list on another threadh.

I just watched it... I thought it was OK. The best part was when John Shumway showed his complete lack of knowledge by asking Swann if he would be for the state providing a stop-gap to IOC if they are awarded the license.

He meant if the state would provide money to get started on the construction until IOC actually started bringing in revenue from the casino... to which Swann kindly informed him that IOC will fork over the cash for the construction within 90 days of being awarded the license.

I haven't been following the different plans because I figure the "award" is already bought and paid for so what's the point... BUT even I knew that IOC was giving the money up front. Maybe JS was just setting up the answer to make it a point.

If that's the case, then it was a good move. I think the city, media and the citizens want the IOC to win. Many people have talked about the Pens leaving with negative overtone. Everyone in the Western Hemisphere knows that the Hill is the most rundown area of the city. Station Square is already a pain to get into. Not to mention, that most of the middle class can't even afford to go and visit because of the gawdy prices. So Harrah's is proposing 4,000 jobs. Who is going to hold these jobs? So FC is talking about building a hotel and condominiums. Come-on, does anyone actually believe that someone from the hill could afford to live in one of those condominiums. If FC wins this license, Station Square will only be a place where the city's rich can visit.

There are three people who are staying pretty mum on the slots for arena issue. Those three pigs would be Rendell, Onorato, and O'Connor. Before the slots idea, when the arena was brought up, we always heard from Murphy, Onorato, and Rendell about how there is no money available for public funding. The city, county, or state could not afford to provide financing. Besides, everyone knows that it will become another taxpayer nightmare. Now, that the Pens have figured out a private financing plan, Rendell wants to talk about a plan that would include financing from the team and public funding. What is it fat Eddie? All I keep hearing that fat bass turd talk about is his plan this, his plan that. Where did this money come from? Is it from the money that Harrah's donated for his campaign?

Fat Eddie doesn't give a rat's rump about Pittsburgh and what would be best for Pittsburgh. Now, he is playing Lemieux and Sawyer like fiddles. And with Onorato and O'Connor staying quiet on the slots issue, they are starting to show that they don't care about the Pens or the upper hill.

Rendell isn't playing anyone right now, he's paying back debts owed for his initial election support. The other two locals are afraid of damaging their political careers forever by taking a position at all, small fish in a big pond. Money talks, the average man walks or drives a slider.

The thing that truly scares Rendell is that Swann is an afro-american male who is by his name recognizable by most of the constituents in this state. This means he can pull in the Philly vote and given the right campaign statements, the vaste majority of the rest of the state. The people that didn't vote for Ed in the first place.

Rendell doesn't care at all about Pittsburgh, the Penguins, or any other western pennsylvania town. Heck, he doesn't even really care about Philadelphia, it just buys him a good voting base if appears to throw them bones.

All Ed knows is that if he can stay in office, his influence with the big money crowd grows. Accordingly his bank account will grow too as he parlays his influence. If he survives another term he is likely gin for life via the network of corruption in this state. Heck if he survives until his cronies get the licenses he is gin.

First time gambling license's are a huge big ticket item for graft. One that only comes once to a state. Were not talking a few complimentary trips, dinners, dancers or drinks here. This is really big money.

For some reason the fog is so thick that the many a deer is getting slammed while staring into the high beams.
Swann has nothing to do with who gets the liscence. He can posture all he likes, but he has zero influence. Fast Eddy has some influence, but he is not so dumb to play sides (in public). A board will pick the liscensee, not the 11 politicians, and definitely not Swann or even worse, Santorum.
If a politician is backing any proposal, they are trying to illegally influence the process. They are the ones who are more likely to be greased by IOC than those staying neutral. That is why they set the process to be done by a board - to try to keep the politicians out of the selection process.
This has nothing to do with an arena. It has everything to do with a cash cow. It is a shame to know that poor western PA suckers will have to forfiet billions in gambling losses to fund an arena for the Penguins.

Z, if you really believe Ed has no influence with this board you must be naive. He appointed and owns this board, just like the big money owns him.

Maybe it's a lost cause, but why not go ahead and elect Swann governor? The license, thanks to Fast Eddie, will not be awarded until AFTER the election. So, if Swann's the gov, he might not "decide" who gets the license, but it couldn't hurt that he is backing it. The trick to being a successful leader is not necessarily your experience, but the people you pick around you. Swann has my vote!

I am in no way suggesting that anyone here is easily lead or dim witted. However I feel like I have to say that Swann is a Republican. All of the clowns involving the arena fiasco are democrats.

Remember when Kerry tried to pass himself off as a hunter? Nough said....

You really have a thing about living in the past, don't you? The casino is getting built, and those billions are going to be lost, no matter what. Why not get an arena out of the deal?

Someone should of asked about the business he runs out of California, that sells Steelers merchandise, that has never paid a tax yet.

Or about his great voting record.

Those are a few of the reasons why I will never vote for Swanny. For one thing, he isnt going to make ONE BIT of difference in the slots license discission. It's nice to hear ANYBODY in politics say anything good about Pittsburgh First but he is only fishing in our lake because he knows the fish are biting on this issue.

Bottom line. Who really cares about the arena when our whole world is at stake? Why would you want to bump this guy up a rung and make him closer to being the President!!?? I feel sick....

I hate Rendell. Really I do. Swann has looked lost though anythme I have seen him pressed on any major issue.

It's like choosing between a giant turd, and a semi-giant turd at this point.

It's nice to see him throw his support behind the IOC, but really other than the Yinzers I don't know how much it's gonna help.

Well yeah. I mean doesnt it go Govener...Senator....President? Something like that. Trust me, you dont want him being in any office anywhere. Take this qoute for example:

Madden asked,"It must be tempting to use your STeeler profile in the elcetion race." Swann says,"I dont think that it would be right to do that."

Oh man...my ribs... ...ahh man too funny.

I would have said to him," Well...if its so wrong...why dont you run for Govenor somewhere else?"

Sawnn would say," DHHHHHHahahhahahahaharrrrrr"

Since you seem sincerely interested in educating yourself, I suggest asking the middle school civics teacher tomorrow after class for some details. Maybe she can suggest a book with a lot of pictures.
