He is right and wrong at the same time. Pirate "fans" if there are any would not have that kind of intensity and passion for a World Series game. Hockey fans are a hardcore cult following. On the other hand, I'd like to think Pens fans would not be mind numbed idiots like Pirate fans and enable a culture of suckdom that the drones that attend Pirate games have perpetuated for the last 13+ seasons. Hopefully the Pens turn the ship around and don't force us to show tough love.

I actually take this as a compliment. He is basically saying Pens fans are diehard and follow the team.

I am a diehard Steeler and Pitt fan too, but I know a lot of people who say they are diehard Steelers that would drop them in a second at the first sign of a losing season.

They all call me stupid for following the Pens and listening/watching every game and for having season tickets for Pitt football. But the first moment those teams do good, they jump all over them. There are only a few of us this diehard, but we will stick through good and the bad, and that is what Smizik is saying.

Is he? first off he doesn't "get" hockey & never will.
I'm guessing he was at the 1st game & last night's.

From his article I take that he believes the pens fans are blinded by
something; not the wins for sure. He doesn't mention that for the past
few years it has been to save the pens & hockey for pittsburgh.

This would have been the most unholy of seasons for the steelers
and their fans if Ben Roethlisberger doesn't make a tackle in Indy.

Pirates' 13 years & counting  just nothing to add to their fate.

Smizik has the pens fans classified as being in a cult...we cannot see the reality of the pens losses. Penguin should have expectations of winning
for their loyality.
Maybe there is smidge of truth there, but I'm thrilled and happy that pittsburgh continues to have 3 sports for people to pick and choose.

At this juncture (with new-arena machinations aside), the difference between the Penguins (and their fans) and the Pirates (and their fans) is really simple:

Hope.

The Penguins and their fans gots it.

The Pirates and their fans (???) don't.
