Oh come on, his incompetence didn't hurt us until probably 5-6 years ago. His first 5-6 years were pretty good.

I agree but you can't live off of a few trades made 14 years ago forever. I'm not even upset with the things he did this summer but waiting so long to fire Edzo was horrible and made the team worse by setting back Sid, Whitney and Christensen's development.

It is sad in a way, but it's definitely time to move on.

This is bitter sweet for me.

I was hoping that he'd last 2 more years and then get canned.

Just about the time I graduate with my Sports Management degree.

I've always been a CP supporter but it was clear the past two years that his time in Pittsburgh was coming to an end, and deservedly so. I don't think he's nearly as horrible as many posters infer and just hope that whomever replaces him does this franchise justice and doesn't squander the very solid group of prospects CP has compiled.

Good luck, CP and let's hope Ken Sawyer has a keen mind in selecting your successor.

I once saw CP at Franco's in that Fox Chapel / Aspinwall quasi strip mall. He dismissed my acknowledgment of him.

I once ordered a drink from the guy at Bob's Garage, he was a guest bartender. He autographed a napkin for me. We chatted. I thought he was a good guy.

I played hockey against his son a few times. I remember going out of my way to do a little stick work on his back, wrists and back of legs. Just because.

What that all means .. I'm not sure

But I think CP was popular PGH celebrity and respected the fans and the people he had contact with. He brought the cup to pgh and will always be remembered because of that but it was time for him to leave. The Pens have a renaissance of sorts going on at the moment. Young players, a new arena (lets not get into that one), new ownership group. It was time to bring in a new GM. And lay to rest the Mario Era as we knew it. It's the Crosby era. The times are a changin'.

Moji - CP respected nothing but the bottom of his glass. The man gave fans, media, and team personnel barely the time of day. He would threaten to fire people all the time and refused to listen to anyone's ideas.

The Penguins have been failures because Patrick is a miserable human being.

I say Good-Bye!

Hey, I must have been at the same thing at Bob's Garage!! He autographed a napkin for me too, and he was drinking Heinekens like it was his job (which as it turns out may have been a part of his job). I thought he was cool.

He was drinking if I remember and was being hit on by a bunch of old bags. Weren't they giving away sticks that night too?

His dismissal of me and my girlfriend was my most recent interaction with him so by all accounts you're probably correct. Wallowing in self-pity, shunned by the media, blamed publically for the Penguins failures.

Eric, your personal hatred for CP is becoming offensive. I met CP several times and he always took the time to chat, sign an autograph, etc. Once, when I was about 14 I saw CP at a celebrity hockey game I told him how badly I wished I could get Lemieux's autograph. He told me to send him a photo of Mario and he'd get it signed. I sent it and less than a week later it was returned, signed and personalized by Mario.

I hope the next GM can live up to your lofty standards. Somehow I doubt that will happen. I wonder who your next scapegoat will be.

Pat Quinn WAS the GM until about 2 seasons ago. Ferguson has concentrated more on working in younger draftees. Quinn NEVER believed in young players. Antopov was the only one he ever gave a chance to. It was Quinn who brought in guys like Belfour, Tucker, Roberts...
