How can they consistenty put these letters in? Poorly written, full of errors, and just plain ignorant. Not only do they put it in, it's the lead letter.

I don't mind them printing anti-Mario or anti-Arena letters, but what really irritates me is when seemingly all of those types of letters have their facts wrong.

How great of a man is he who insists on the poor taxpayers paying for his plaything (hockey)?

The [infrastructure] of Pittsburgh and the needs of the county far outweigh the need for another arena.

Lemieux has campaigned enough for his sport that few people care about.

1: No one is asking for taxpayers' money.
2: The proposal includes a billion-dollar-development in the downtown area.
3: The Pens' attendance is up 34% - the largest increase in the league. A lot of people are buying tickets considering few people care about.

You could also factor in how the county and city are going to make up the taxes generated by the Penguins when they leave town...

It should not surprise me that there are that many people out there that don't understand the basic facts surrounding this issue. The Pens need to take out a full page ad in both papers that hit on the biggest ones like:

-the proposal does NOT include taxpayer funds
-the casino will NOT be owned and operated by the team
-how much money just the presence of the team generates for the area in amusement taxes, etc
-expand that to show the estimates of the money lost to the city/county during the lockout year

Show people that don't have an interest in hockey exactly what the area will lose BESIDES a hockey team. If the city and county lose that revenue, they WILL find a way to make up for it...

It's fairly apparent that the PG is for the Isle of Capri plan so it's probably to get people like us fired up and spread the word.

I guess you could use the internet (www.superpages.com) and send him a letter or even call him at home. I would publish the information here, but why get myself in trouble when you could just go get the info yourselves.

Yes, open debate is a good thing and informed letters would be fine. But like you said, it is just ridiculous to put this in the paper. And most of the anti-arena letters have been like this. I haven't seen one yet that gives a legitimate arguement against the Pens' plan. Each one says either they don't deserve an arena, they shouldn't use public money, or gambling is bad.

Is Penguins' Marketing Division Doing a Good Enough Job?

Postby PensFanBryan on Fri Feb 03, 2006 2:18 pm

Ok, so ive heard a couple commercials about the new arena. Problem is i'm hearing them durring Penguin Games, and only on 94.5! The people listening to the games on the radio, more than likely, already know about the plan for the new arena.

They need to branch out. They need to start educating the "Public". Look at the letters to the editor link. This guy is opposing the new Arena because he still thinks that the Penguins want the "taxpayers" to pay for it. They need to reach this guy, and people like this guy. I dont know maybe he can't be reached!

If you live in the city, how do you not know about the plan already? Its been on every newspaper, every newscast in the city, multiple times. Does this guy not own a TV or a Radio? does he not subscribe to the paper he just wrote a "letter to the editor" to? What is going on with Craig from Duquesne? And if your not sports fan, just dont speak up, please. YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!!

If everybody took the time to write a letter to the editor at the PG or Trib instead of posting about letters they don't like it would be a more effective way to get the the Pens message out to the public.

Couldn't agree more about needing to reach a different audience. They have already reached that audience. Those are the people, like us, that are writing the letters, calling the talk shows, etc. Madden mentioned this Craig from Duquesne on the radio today and supposedly his is some psycho that wrote some stupid book about minor leage baseball or something. This only makes me wonder where the PG stands if they are printing psycho babble crap like this. Unless you think positively that these are the only type of negative letters they are receiving about the Arena issue.

I could see if people were writing in against slots in Pittsburgh, but i cant see how anyone in Western PA or PA in general could be against this plan the Penguins have set in place.

I emailed this guy Craig... hopefully i helped better his knowledge... Probably not, he probably wont even read the email, but its worth a try. If he lives in Duquesne and doesnt know the plan, i dont know if he can be helped, even if he reads it. Just like the Old lady Grover had on after the Rangers game Jan. 19 (i believe). He explained it, but she still couldnt get it right!

I just did, not to get published but to call out the PG on their irresponsible practice of printing false information in the form of letters to the editor.

They know it's false but continue to publish them.

Gawd, what mindless drivel in that article!! You don't need to delve deep to see why there's still no new arena there, do you?

I like your idea of the Pens running a full page ad/explanation of the arena proposal. The only thing wrong with that idea is that it would have to be read by people with open mind, not sealed shut like Mr Galik's is.

I already did and it was printed. That's part of the reason I get so ticked when I read some of these letters. In my letter I laid out a logical, well-informed opinion. Then someone who just puts a bunch of bs with no facts also gets printed.

I read that this morning, over my bowl of Frosted Flakes. I was utterly disgusted by that person. It made me so mad, I was seriously mad about it for about the next two hours. Obviously, Craig Galik has no idea what he's talking about, and needs to actually know a little bit about the Penguins and Lemieux before voicing his opinion.
