Camp 2008, Day 1 report is up

Postby netwolf on Wed Sep 17, 2008 3:45 pm

For some reason, the report is not listed on the main reports page (I suppose it forgot who I am  ), but is viewable here:
http://letsgopens.com/camp_reports.php?id=43

Might have photos later this evening....

It really, really is. It wasn't anything like that, although I think Judy was seriously concerned about me during that marathon game in the Finals (rightfully so, more than likely).

He looked like a guy a little unsure of himself, which is understandable. You can see the talent is there though. He's an NHL caliber player as far as hands and skating go. The biggest determining factor for him is what he can do away from the puck. He needs to be positionally sound in all three zones and he can't stay on the outside all the time.

Today, he tended to stay on the perimeter more often than not, but he did go into the "dirty" areas when he had to. I don't remember the player, but he did a really nice job backchecking on someone during the scrimmage - caught him from behind and lifted his stick before the guy knew he was there.

Right now though, it looks like he's fighting an uphill battle. It's very early though, and things could change quickly, but as of now the top 3 lines look to be set, and he's not on them. He's among a large group of guys trying to nail down a spot on the 4th line - Beech, Kennedy, Stone, Taffe, etc. Godard would be listed there too, but given his deal I figure he's a lock for the final roster, though he might not dress all the time.

Not sure. I didn't get out of the gates as early as I had hoped, so we got there a little after 9. (Don't tell RJ though; he'll dock me some bananas.)

sykora should be on the first power play, thus satan should struggle to break 30 (that would be A LOT of even strength goals for him to approach even 40).

Solid report as always Net...

Good observation about Gill/Scuderi. Anyone else think that the Gill/Scuderi pairing will be expoited during the course of the season? 2 plodding defenseman...Speed kills in the "new NHL."

Thanks for the report and welcome back 'wolf!

How did Fedotenko look? I'm worried about Dupuis on the first line.

I think the Crosby/Satan pair will be every bit as good (productive, dangerous, effective) as the Malkin/Sykora pair. That might force the Pens to alter the "Stack the top PP unit" approach. Otherwise, someone is going to be left out. With Whitney out, they could try Malkin at point again (hopefully right and not left) and have Satan, Sykora, and Crosby up front. Even then, Staal is off the top group. They certainly have plenty of capable forwards for power play work. Fedotenko is capable of jamming up it front as well and even a small, skilled guy like Pesonen (if he makes the team) could do well with the extra time and space.

AHHHH HOCKEY! Finally. I have this huge goofy grin on my face from reading that report + getting NHL 06 for my PC for 50 cents at a rummage sale. Not quite NHL09, but it's something, especially since I don't have a 360 or PS3.

Nice report.
