Staal and Geno...

Postby LdubsRoot23 on Thu Sep 18, 2008 12:47 am

According to the TSN video about the Pens opening camp...Staal says he "is excited about this opportunity and plans on taking full advantage."

It makes a lot of sense, this also sets up the PK pairs to be Sid-Dupuis, Staal-Malkin and Talbot with either Cooke or Fedo. I'm still not confident in the 4th line center but it looks like both Beech and Taffe came to camp to try to win a spot and I hope Kennedy is also working on faceoffs as well.

I say Staal has a three dimensional role on this team-

-In front of the net on the Powerplay
-On the first penalty killing unit
-second line left winger

Sounds good?

I believe you are spot on with your 3 assumptions. At least this is the vision of the organization. He need to prove himself in these 3 roles in order to get his big pay day.

I'd love to see Jordan on the first line with Sidney but I don't know if he is ready for it. Remember that Staal's production was at it's highest playing on a line of Staal Malkin Ouellet. Your pretty much dead on though.

I think Crosby works better with speed. Malkin works better with changing tempo, Staal matches better with malkin.

I want Staal to play on the 1st power play and go in front of the net. If he develops a bit of nasty he could be deadly in front. He has the size, skill and hands to dominate in front on the power play....

I would think 1st unit is Staal in front, Satan and Crosby on the boards and Malkin and Gonchar at the point.

2nd unit would be Fedotenko in front, Talbot and Sykora on the boards with Letang and Eaton on the points.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but just because Staal is big does not mean he will be good infront. Look at Dino Ciccarelli. He was maybe 5'10" - 175lbs and he was very good infront. Playing infront is an art.

I could see that with Sykora and Satan switching out depending on who is on a hot streak at that point.

Maybe but I think Sykora did a good job running the #2 PP when he was demoted last year.

Staal's had some good ones to learn from... LeClair, Roberts, even Malone. I thought Staal's done well in his limited time playing in front of the net on the PP. I think I might have said it in this thread, or maybe it was in another, but I think probably the biggest factor in moving Staal to second line wing is to allow him to be able to take on a full PP load and totally fill Malone's role. I remember last year their reasoning for not giving Staal more PP time was that they didn't want to have their top three centers all on the same PP unit. If he takes well to being the big man in front of the net, he really could have a monster year.
