This shortened training camp isn't allowing Pesonen to get a real shot to make the team as a top 6 forward...
I would let him play with Sid for a little while. We all know what Dupuis is and what he can do...
I said this in another thread... Pesonen won't be GIVEN anything. He's here to prove he belongs on the team. Sid and Malkin can make anyone look good, so he's going to have to prove his can be effective by himself before he is given time with the top line guys. MT has never just put someone on the top line when they have no track record. Even Sykora had to work his way up to Malkin's line.
Just giving him some time to play top 6 wing in a scrimmage and see how he looks, isn't giving him anything away for free, it's merely giving him a chance to prove he can play that role. And given the somewhat underwhelming pool of candidates to fill the final slot in our top 6, there is nothing wrong with giving him a look at that spot. It's only logical. I really don't see what harm it would do. What good is it to make him prove he can be a third line grinder before giving him a look in top 6, if that's not really what kind of player he is. It's not like Dupuis has such an impressive track record, but for some reason he's the default guy on the first line. You mention Sykora had to work his way up to the top lines. That's a really interesting take on it, because the way I saw it, MT pointlessly had Sykora on the lower lines, where he did nothing, and then put him with Malkin where he thrived, and he should have been with Malkin all along.
