New Gameday Points Game with Ticket Prize

Postby enenvee on Wed Sep 24, 2008 11:33 pm

A different board used to have a game where everyone would pick a player to score each game and then accumulate points. Problem was that the points were not weighted so 90% of the people picked Crosby or Malkin every game and it basically took the fun out of it.

Another problem was that no one kept track so you never knew where you stood.

The third problem was that you got nothing for winning. I think I've solved all of those problems. First of all, a certain member of the boards who wishes to remain anonymous has offered two tickets to the winner at the end of the season.

Second, I promise to keep track and update the scores on a regular basis. And third, the scoring will be weighted so that just picking Crosby every game will not guarantee victory. For instance, Crosby and Malkin average 1.4 and 1.3 ppg last season, respectively. So their points will count as 1. A guy who averaged .6 or .7 ppg will count his points at 2. A guy that scored at a .3 ppg avg. will likely get 4 or 5 points per actual point. And Eaton will probably count as 10 :D . Players will be broken into tiers based on scoring average and these tiers will be updated as the season goes along, maybe every ten games.

I'm willing to do the scoring and set up the threads for each game but I'm just looking to see if their will be interest. If you guys would be into it, I'll design a spreadsheet and make it happen.

I think it would be a pretty fun thing for everyone to get into and, like I said, there is a sweet prize for the winner. I'll wait to see if anyone is into it.

I think we should just set it up so that every maybe 5 NHL games is counted as a round, and you can't pick the same person more than once in a round. Its harder to run, but better than weighting the scores, because no one is ever going to pick someone like Eaton or Scuds. I'd be more interested in something like that.

That was going to be my plan; depending on the lineup, I would alternate between Orpik, Eaton & Scuderi. Depending on how his goal scoring goes this season, I might even toss Kennedy into the fray.

So the winner gets 2 tix at the end of the season, but the season will already be over. So this will either be an aweomse prize (2 tix for next year), or a non-prize (2 Bucco tix). If it's the latter, I'm picking Sabu every game.

I also thought of something like that, Idoit. Or limiting the number of times you can pick a player over the course of the season. Only problem is that I don't really want to go back through old posts and check to see if people have "overused" a player. Ultimately, if I'm keeping score the responsibility would fall with me and it seems like way too much work. That's why I thought the weighted system would be better. It would still take some time but not nearly as much as keeping track of everyone's picks for the entire season.

And I think people will take the long shot guys every now and then. It's an 82 game season plus playoffs and I think it would be worth a roll of the dice every now and again to take Orp or Eaton and hope they pick up a second assist or something. I know I'll give those bottom tier guys a shot from time to time.

Give it a shot for the first few games of the year and if you're not having any fun, I'll give you double your money back. :D

Seems like there is some interest, so I'll definitely get it going.

I'm not sure what the fathead prize is, but the prize for this game will be two genuine tickets to a Penguins regular season game during the final season of historic Mellon Arena (not to oversell it or anything).

I'd like this to roll all the way through the playoffs, so yes, the tickets will be for a game in 09-10. I've already confirmed this with the guy who is offering them up. He's a long time STH who has no plans of giving up his tickets so we should be all good.

Okay, since we set a roster a flew to Sweden, I figured I'd get the scoring groups figured out. I based it totally on last years scoring averages. Some players (like Gogo) will most likely not live up to the group they are in (but I hope he does). And other guys (like Staal) better move up the ladder pretty quick (or it could get ugly around here). Like I said earlier, I'll adjust the Groups every ten games so these will change.

Take a look and see what you guys think. Also, I'm not sure if goalies should be included in any way. If anyone has ideas there, please throw them on the table.

GROUP ONE (Point Multiplier: 1)
Sidney Crosby 53 24 48 72 1.4
Evgeni Malkin 82 47 59 106 1.3

GROUP TWO (Point Multiplier: 2)
Petr Sykora 81 28 35 63 0.8
Alex Goligoski 3 0 2 2 0.7

GROUP THREE (Point Multiplier: 3)
Miroslav Satan 80 16 25 41 0.5
Ruslan Fedotenko 67 16 17 33 0.5
Maxime Talbot 63 12 14 26 0.4

GROUP FOUR (Point Multiplier: 5)
Jordan Staal 82 12 16 28 0.3
Pascal Dupuis 78 12 15 27 0.3
Hal Gill 81 3 21 24 0.3
Matt Cooke 78 10 13 23 0.3
Tyler Kennedy 55 10 9 19 0.3
Kris Letang 63 6 11 17 0.3
Jeff Taffe 45 5 7 12 0.3

GROUP Five (Point Multiplier: 10)
Darryl Sydor 74 1 12 13 0.2
Brooks Orpik 78 1 10 11 0.1
Rob Scuderi 71 0 5 5 0.1
Mark Eaton 36 0 3 3 0.1
Eric Godard 74 1 1 2 0.1
Paul Bissonnette No NHL Stats 0.0
Janne Pesonen No NHL Stats 0.0
William Thomas 7 0 0 0 0.0

(Goalies ?)
Marc-Andre Fleury
Danny Sabourin
John Curry

I probably won't be involved, but I would modify some of those groupings.

Pesonen and Thomas should move up a group.
Goligoski should move down with Letang's group.
Staal and Dupuis need to move up.
Satan should be with Sykora.

Just my opinion on what I see.

If someone calls a goalie goal and gets it, they should automatically win

Goalies should be 50 points, which would basically be an auto win.
