Malkin and possibly Orpik to get the A

Postby Judy on Wed Oct 01, 2008 8:45 am

Which we already kind of knew.... :)

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Evgeni Malkin said today that he will serve as an alternate captain for the Penguins in October.

"First month," Malkin said after practice at Globe Arena. "We'll rotate."

Coach Michel Therrien did not confirm the decision, saying an announcement on his club's alternates would be made "this weekend."

Defenseman Brooks Orpik, whose dressing-room leadership has been unanimously praised by teammates, neither confirmed nor denied yesterday that he has also been chosen to serve as an alternate - though, perhaps not on a rotating basis

I suspect they're going to see how October goes and if they & Malkin think it's good, he'll keep the A permanently.

"It'll be OK," Malkin said of speaking to NHL on-ice officials. "No worries."

Congrats to Brooks & Evgeni.

I love how our team has so much character that we can rotate the A like that.

How would the rotation work? Would it rotate say to Max and then back to Geno?
How many "A"'s are there usually, just 2?

All of last year's A's are gone - Gonchar, Malone, Roberts to start the season.

I would think Malkin, Sydor, and Orpik are the candidates here. I don't like Fedo getting it at all.

I would like it to be Orpik and Malkin permanently for the whole season, and for them not to rotate it.

I'm surprised Sykora wasn't mentioned in the running for an 'A.' Maybe that's just because I'm a Sykorite.

I wasn't actually advocating that Fedotenko get an A. I was merely pointing out that with the new Pesonites, I was a Fedonite... that's all. I like Orpik and Geno having A's. I'd like see Max one, though.

As the official unofficial arbiter of these things, I'm going to have to suggest "Pesonistas" and "Fedotenkoids".

I can barely say Fedotenkoids, and just now I nearly couldn't type it. :-P But okay, if you say so.

Well, I'm not set in (Ryan) Stone on these. I'm sure there's other possibilities.

Pesoninnies? Fedotenkies? Ruslanders?

"Brooks has become a great leader," defenseman Darryl Sydor said recently. "he and (malone) were two of the guys that really stepped up last season. YOu could see it in the room and on the ice every day."

more about the alternate captains.

I saw a photo of where the pens/sens will be playing, the globe. Cool-looking building, the architecture reminds me of the igloo. :)

Drop the puck already. :P

Just in case anyone was still wondering, the PG said that both Orpik & Malkin were officially named alternate captains.

Other notes from there: Talbot is cleared for Saturday, Gonch's surgery was successful.
