Does Staal need to play more physical?

Postby ron_duguays_hair on Tue Oct 07, 2008 12:03 pm

First off let me preface this by saying I'm not the type of idiot fan who overrates physical play i.e. Kasper/Roberts fans.

But it seems to me that a more physical Staal, a Staal that played with a little more of an edge would greatly benefit our team. He could straight up punish people in the corners if he chose to. He could very well be intimidating. We are missing this kind of intimidating presence on the first two lines. Was I a Malone fan? Yeah I guess but it was the right move letting him go for that salary.

But does the organization want him to be this kind of player? I don't know obviously. Is he penciled in to now be a power forward winger? No sure. Is it even in Staal's nature to be this kind of player? That's to be determined.

The end of the last game after Alfie got leveled Staal let Philips go right after Cooke. He needed to step up to Phillips even it was just your typical bearhug. He's the biggest guy out there and needs to flex it a little. This is the kind of edge I'm talking about. IMO hopefully it will be something he'll grow into.

Your thoughts?

I don't think that I would say Staal is not physical enough, because he is very strong and never shy about contact. What I would like to see from him is a little more edge. I would like him to be MEANER!!

He's still so young, I imagine as he grows and starts getting man strength he'll be able to add a bit more grit to his game. I think I remember him having his first fight last season, so I would not be totally surprised to see him drop them again this year once or twice.

He is going to have to if they are going to be playing him in front of the net more. I'm not worried about it, he'll do fine.

I've said it before.

I'd still consider it, too.

Is this serious. There is no way the Pens are going to sign him after this year. He would not fit under the cap.

So, we would lose Stall, and then lose Gaborik after this year, so basically getting nothing for Staal.

If you were being sarcastic, I apologize.

He is still only 20 so i'll give him time. For what it's worth i don't think he'll ever be a mean bad-@$$ fighter type, but i would like to see him develop into a guy who hits defensemen often, and hits them hard. He has the size, strength, and speed to be a brutal body checker. The kind of guy who forces d-men into bad plays out of fear that he is going to blast them. This is especially meaningful in a 7 game playoff series.................... He was inconsistent with his physical play at times, but Kevin Stevens was awesome at this in his heyday.

they wont trade Staal for Gaborik but if they did they could fit him in the cap

They wouldn't have signed Oprik, and would have gotten someone cheaper than Satan.
