I realllly hope they don't have a ceremony. That would be beyond cheesy. You don't celebrate second place.

I loved those banners from the Cup years, and the way they were set up. But at the same time, if we start winning more championships, divisions, etc, it will start looking like a mess up there if everything isn't standard.
I also like the idea of the Hart and Art Ross winners having a banner. We have a pretty good history with them, and only hope to add more with Crosby and Malkin.
I think Shero got a good look at all the banners in Detroit which are standardized and very classy I think.

Bathgate wrote:About 7 or 8 years ago, they put up a red and white banner to honor the 3 Calder Cup championships of the Pittsburgh Hornets of the AHL prior to the arrival of the Penguins. However, when the hockey strike ended and we came back after a year off, that banner was gone from the Arena rafters. They need to restore that banner or a replacement to recognize the long history of hockey in Pittsburgh prior to the Penguins arrival in 1967.
If I can find the site, they said those banners are missing and haven't been found since being taken down.
Now that I think of it, I've been going to games since the mid 90s and I don't remember that banner. Anybody have a pic?

Funny quote from Free Candy about the new banners:
"They have a whole museum built for a ship that went one mile and sunk," Orpik said. "I kind of compare it to that."

New Cup Banners are solid. The real gold is still there in all it's glory.

The new old division title ones are also decent.
2008 Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference are decent; mostly black with some white and vegas gold striping. The MVP and Scoring title banners are weak; mostly brown with white striping and black lettering.

I'll put up pictures tomorrow if they haven't surfaced by then.

I liked the original banners better however I can understand them standardizing them. They looked ok, not great but not bleh either.
Hopefully when the guys skate at practice and play at home, they can look at the names on the MVP/Art Ross banner and know they have to shoot more to get their name up on that :p

Me too. I'm kind of sorry they got rid of the original shape of the cup banners, but I'm not too broken up about it.

I definitely miss the old SCC banner format too, but overall I really like the look. Are they ever going to straighten out the banners from 07-8 though? That's bugging me.

In the PG there is an article indicating that banners should only hang for the cup final victories. IF this is the standard, then fine. Last year the penguins were able to sweep the team that humiliated them the prior spring, beat the 2nd best goalie in Lundqvist~ after he couldn’t keep a 3 zip lead in the 1st game of the series. Then all the penguins did was go on to beat a team in five games that has tortured their franchise since forever. Then took their season to almost the last possible game to play for the cup. I get why the players may use the finals or nothing as a motivational tool, but returning to the conference finals isn’t guaranteed to any team. They didn’t take any joy last June in their accomplishments, but winning the conference last year was awesome.
As Brooks told fans about booing Hossa (dumb) back at Brooks for comparing the Stanley cup play-off run to a 1600 hundreds ship that did nothing but sink.

The 64$ question... where's the 1990-1991 regular season Patrick Division Champions banner?
The pittsburghhockey.net link has two photos of an angle showing the Cup years playoff banners in the foreground, and the regular season in the background, where one is the old banners, and the other the new ones. The one with the old banners shows 6 banners for the regular season items, and the same angle for the new banners now shows only 5 there...
