Everyone knows that, thanks to last year's long playoff run, expectations for this year's Penguin team were extremely high. But sometimes those expectations can get in the way of our objective analysis. We let our emotions cloud our judgment. And, yes, the first person I point a finger at is the one I look at in the mirror every morning. But I'm sure there are many more out there.
Just for me, as well as those others, I now give you the Penguins' four-game records since the lockout.
2005: 0-1-3, 11GF, 18GA
2006: 2-2-0, 11GF, 12GA
2007: 2-2-0, 14GF, 15GA
2008: 2-1-1, 9GF, 10GA
That's right, folks. The Pens have their best 4-game record in the Sidney Crosby era. And that is in four games against teams expected to make the playoffs. Each of the previous starts included at least one game against a non-playoff team.
Are they playing well right now? No, absolutely not. But they are still better off than at a similar point in any of the Crosby seasons.
