Funny how expectations cloud our view

Postby Mad City Mike on Thu Oct 16, 2008 1:58 pm

Everyone knows that, thanks to last year's long playoff run, expectations for this year's Penguin team were extremely high. But sometimes those expectations can get in the way of our objective analysis. We let our emotions cloud our judgment. And, yes, the first person I point a finger at is the one I look at in the mirror every morning. But I'm sure there are many more out there.

Just for me, as well as those others, I now give you the Penguins' four-game records since the lockout.

2005: 0-1-3, 11GF, 18GA
2006: 2-2-0, 11GF, 12GA
2007: 2-2-0, 14GF, 15GA
2008: 2-1-1, 9GF, 10GA

That's right, folks. The Pens have their best 4-game record in the Sidney Crosby era. And that is in four games against teams expected to make the playoffs. Each of the previous starts included at least one game against a non-playoff team.

Are they playing well right now? No, absolutely not. But they are still better off than at a similar point in any of the Crosby seasons.

Logic and facts, how unique.
still, how do we get to the finals without all the messy regular season details.

I think you are BSing us. Nothing is clouded. We should have had 5 wins in our first 4 games.

I won't argue with the fact that they've gotten points so far, but it's fair to point out that the team has looked incredibly ragged so far. There are a thousand possible reasons, to be sure, but the Pens haven't played their best hockey this year. Either the performance will improve or the results will get worse.

Yeah, They are good! Pens should have drafted Dubinsky instead of Crosby.

I agree the performance hasn't been the greatest, and to me the PP has been brutally frustrating. I think MCM is just pointing out that it is only 4 games in, and it is premature to start talking trading players, having to spend $8M on one player just to help Sid, Sid being hurt or not himself, etc, etc.

Most of the time I dont agree with your grades Mike but this topic is a refreshing topic to help aware people that its only 4 games into a very very long season and that we've started out pretty slow each season and really warm up around Thanksgiving....... I think we'll warm up in a few weeks to a month.

Relax.

I've said it before, but there is not one line intact from last year. I think only Scuderi/Gill remains as a pairing on D. They are asking a lot of two young kids on D. They had a disruptive trip overseas that limited the time for the new guys to fit in, and then a 5 day layoff. They played 4 straight playoff teams so far.

It's not too hard to figure some reasons for not panicking yet. Give it 10-12 games and see if we are playing a more cohesive game.
