Why we would trade Staal for some other good player, who also will be UFa at the end of the season? When Staal can be re-signed,iF? I would trade him only for a player who isnt a UFA at... if that is possible, not big chances there but..

I can see Gonchar getting traded if either Goligoski or Letang prove they can man the PP and log big time minutes.

They would also have to prove to be good in the defensive zone. Don't forget Gonch was on the PK as well and played against the other teams first line most of the time. I think both have great offensive potential but they are Defensemen first, which gonchar is

Gaborik! Everyone wins, except our salary cap. :)

It's funny. Just a few years ago we were complaing about how we'd never get anywhere close to the top salary teams. Now we're almost wishing they'd increase the cap more, so we can fit all these stars in here.

The fact that its stars that we don't even have is the hilarious part.

A trade involving Staal at this point would be similar to Columbus trading Zherdev:

"Blue Jackets traded enigmatic offensive star Nikolai Zherdev and center Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Christian Backman and Fedor Tyutin on Wednesday."

would a staal for bergeron trade be possible? I doubt it but it would be amazing to see Sid and Bergeron together in Pens uniforms.

Credit to Tinker for that dream.

I still think trading staal now would be a mistake. Anyone recall a guy named Naslund???

How about Corey Perry? I just heard on TSN that Anaheim is looking to shake up their lineup.

I'd be interested in Perry, thats probably the most interesting name if he's actually available, which I doubt.

Perry would rule. But Burke just signed him to a 5 year extension with an annual cap hit of $5.3MM. I think he is part of their core...

Yeah, but maybe they are so tight against the cap that a shake up would require liberating money for a pending restricted free agent with likely a lower cap hit in the future in Staal. I know, I am dreamin.

If dealing for Staal also allows them to call up Bobby Ryan...would it be worth it?

If they move someone off their roster I think it would be Kunitz. Perry is young and is part of the core. Moving Kunitz would free up cap space to bring up Ryan. By waiving Klee, I think Burke is trying to see if some GM is stupid enough to take on his salary. If someone bites on Klee I think they have the room to bring Ryan up.

Kunitz is the one that is rumored to be on the block.

Fedotenko for Kunitz

Ducks get a NHL player plus cap space to bring up Ryan too.

Pens get a proven 20-20 guy without moving Staal. Not sure what that does to our cap number. Thomas would be waived (I think he will pass thru) though I don't think that would be enough. Are we getting cap relief on Whit and Gonchar?

Brian Burke would laugh at us so bad...

Kunitz is a 28 y/o LW signed through the 11/12 season for a $3.75m cap hit. He puts up Ryan Malone numbers.

Burke's an idiot who continues to keep his team in salary cap hell due to his piss poor personnel decisions. Watch he'll dump Kunitz just like Schneider for hardly anything because his roster is caulk full of guys he can't move.

Oi... Since someone felt the silly need to bring this up again... The return for Naslund didn't work out obviously. However, Naslund, HIMSELF, is on record as saying that he would not be half the player he is now if that trade never happened. Getting dumped for a nobody and then being allowed to become a UFA and NO ONE wanting to sign you tends to wake a guy up.
