Recchi in the Hall?

Postby laholm64 on Tue Oct 21, 2008 1:15 pm

I used to visit this site several years ago. I didn't care for some of rude comments that a select few posters consistently made, so I got fed up and left. Hungry for Penguins talk I decided to come back. I am very pleased to see that the posts and comments are much more mature and open minded these days.

Having said that I want everyone's opinion on whether or not you think Mark Recchi will make it into the hockey hall of fame or not? I hope this thread wasn't already done resently as I don't want to irritate anyone.

My two favorite active players are Joe Sakic & Mark Recchi. I love watching the Reckin' Ball play, but I have to admit I am also glad he is no longer on the team because I don't think he is a good fit for us.

I will start by saying I do think he should be in the hall some day, but doubt the powers that decide these things will agree. At the beginning of this year he was 21st in all time scoring. If he duplicates the 48 points he had last season he will sit at #14, quietly passing up Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille, Jari Kurri, Dale Hawerchuk, Doug Gilmour, Adam Oates and Bryan Trottier. To me that makes him a slam dunk, but I've read articles in places like ESPN where they didn't think he would make it, so I'm sure others will disagree as well. Just want everyones opinion, thanks.

Too many here are blinded by irrational hatred towards Recchi, so just for mentioning him you will probably have your first-born cursed to a life of blue collar labor and venereal disease.

However, he's a shoo-in for the HOF. 530ish goals and two Cups, 1382 points. Bet the house on it.

Recchi may be on the downswing of his career but in his prime he was one of the best in the league. First ballot hall of famer, no doubt in my mind, whether he's a broken down fossil right now or not.

Statistically he absolutely is. And he will be. The only thing about him, is he did it quietly. He was never a Hart nominee, never really challeneged for a scoring title, and he was playing behind some great players. If my memory serves me correctly (I was like 8 in Recchi's prime).

Will his HoF bust feature a young, mulleted Racchi or an older, goateed Rug Racchi?

How much do they pay for those "hairclub for men" commercials? Maybe the Reckin ball has a career after hockey? I've seen other athletes do it. I have to wonder how these guys spent all their millions to get to the point where they'd humiliate themselves to do a hair commercial? Or do they just enjoy being seen and remembered? If that's the case we'll probably see Brett Favre in those commercials some day. he just can't get his face in the media enough can he? Sorry for staying off course there.

If he doesn't go into the Hall there is something wrong, but my feelings on the way he left Pittsburgh the last time haven't changed.

He is a first ballot HOF without question for me.

Hope the people whose opinions actually count agree.

That Yahoo answers thing is hilarious. Additionally, Brett Favre is the worst. Kind of answering two things here but it's the best.

When was Recchi considered the best player on his team? The best player at his position?

I like Recchi, but if he a) doesn't start his career w/Mario, and b) hang around forever, are we even having this discussion? Being good for a long time doesn't make you great.

True, but doing that while putting up number will put you in the hall of fame.

Recchi only played a couple early seasons with the Pens, and one was a season in which Lemieux missed significant time. If I recall right he had some really big years with the Flyers. He did the bulk of his great work not as a Pen.

Is the HOF the place for compilers or for great players?

http://www.hockey-reference.com/players ... hma01.html

1 50 goal season, 3 40 goal seasons. Led the league in assists once, in the top 10 3 other times. Never a first-team All-Pro, and I don't think he was ever the best player on his team. Top 5 in points 3 times. His playoff performance is a mixed bag- nice numbers on his two Cup years, some decent playoff runs, and a few dogs (his 2006-07 performance with the Pens was not only worse than it looks on the stat sheet, but an absolute cry for help).

Put another way- when during Recchi's career did you ever think "I'm watching one of the best players ever?"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keltner_list

Use those questions, change the baseball references to hockey, and tell me how Recchi scores.

Obviously it should be for great players, but I don't see them denying induction to someone who's 14th in alltime points.

What are you saying? Does being 14th all time make him a great player?

If Joe Mullen can get in the HOF then Recchi should too. Don't take this as an endorsement of either player making it, I think the standards to let people in are on the low side.
