muscle on the PP?

Postby columbia on Wed Oct 22, 2008 7:53 pm

So how many of you are already missing Malone's presence on the PP?
We haven't seen anything resembling a replacement so far and I'm not sure one exists on the current squad.
(Staal? Not so far.)

What's the right move for RS to address this?

Discuss.

The PP has been just fine since they've returned from Sweden. I'm fine with having two snipers.

The powerplay in 1996 didn't have anyone in front of the net either. Since we are definitely not a shoot from the point style powerplay I don't think the lack of a true power forward in front of the net will hurt us. A powerplay as talented as ours is will score a lot of goals. Furthermore, the injury to Gonchar may have been a blessing in disguise, as now Sid or Geno will have to take charge and run the powerplay.

Agreed. Malone worked when Gonchar was taking 2-3 shots from the top of the point each pp. It's much more of a puck movement (dare I say it 90s style Penguins) power play. There isn't just one way to run a power play, and I think the Pens are figuring out the new way. Good riddence to Malone.

I haven't missed him at all. I haven't thought about him once during a game in fact.

Interesting responses so far.
I'll assume this means the complaining about Satan and Staal is over.

I have not complained about either one of them once. So it never began in my case.

Staal is supposed to be the muscle on the power play and the Malone replacement. But he has failed miserably to date...Happy? :D

Also, the powerplay is clicking at 21.6%, it finished at 20.4% last season. So no one should really be missing Gonchar or Whitney yet either.

Staal's first season he was very effective in front of the net on the PP. I'm not ready to give up on him yet.

Having two floaters seems to be working so far. I really can't complain too much about the man power advantage honestly. After sweden they've been pretty productive. I actually think with the type of play makers we have like sid, able to make those passes most can't, it actually helps having two snipers out there instead. And hell, Satan has still been picking up the same garbage Malone did.

Since the Sweden trip, the PP is clicking at about 33%. Missing Malone comes up on my "things to do list" just after shoving a fork into a toaster while taking a bath.

Looking at Satan's goals proves muscles aren't always neccessary for those tap ins/rebound goals.

For the price that Malone wanted I don't want him back.....but I do miss him at times like this, I would love to have him in front of the net and I would love to have him playing along Malkin or Crosby willing to fight anyone that bothered them....thats todays ideal enforcer not a 4th line goon
