Until the pens know how to possess & protect the puck with a lead, they need to score more than 2 goals.
I know~obviously...
I would like to see Mr. Sykora playing more; maybe he is still injured. Zigamantis had 4 shots and somehow Evgeni had zero. ON the chance in the 3rd period, by the time Sidney got the puck back to him, mixture of pens/rangers blocking Geno's vision.

Pens did many things right, but a bad penalty, a great shot for a goal, and 2 1/2 periods of good hockey gone.
No doubt they will learn...

EC would have buried one in the shootout.

Just sayin'.

Let's hope they will.
The worrisome thing is that they have not learned from the caps blow.
They still become unbelievably lazy whenever 2+ goals ahead.

I just feel the need to say this, even though I'm sure it's been said a few times already. I am getting sick of blowing multiple goal leads.

Anyone else think Sydor should stay in for a while? It seemed like he was the defenseman most capable of getting pucks to the net. Activating Goligoski and Letang to go in deep is nice, but none of the other d-men are taking the longer range shots from the blueline.

Sydor has played admirably thus far. He deserves to be in the line-up on most nights.

I've thought Sydor should have been in the top 6 since the start of the season. I don't know if he has a spot once Gonchar and Whitney are healthy, but IMO he's no worse than the 6th best healthy defenseman they have right now.

Rob Rossi reported this morning that Sydor is asking to be traded.

i don't know if anyone else has said this yet (i have not read every single post in this thread), but i was losing my mind when sid missed the empty net near the end just before the rangers scored. 66 buries it.

My guess is that he has been asking for a while. I doubt it happens until we get more healthy bodies on the blueline though.

IN the trib all I see is Sydor's quote about having to the stop losing games in the 3rd period.

It's in this article: http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu ... 95250.html

Of course he wants a trade. He's good enough to play regularly, and even with two injuries on D he's still the seventh defenseman here. He'll likely get his wish once Whitney is healthy, assuming nobody else has gone down by then. The Pens need him now as depth, though. He's going to have to be a team player even if it means sitting a lot.

I'm not surprised Sydor asked out. He still thinks he can play and until 2 games ago wasn't getting a chance to prove it.

That said, I hope people don't take Rossi's report to mean that Sydor hates this team and talks bad about it at every chance. He's a consummate pro and just wants to play. I'm sure if asked, he'd rather play here than get traded. He just doesn't want to sit and I don't think you can hold that against him.

There was the one play in the late second/early third where those two came down in a 3-1 and Malkin had a clear shooting lane but passed to Crosby. Then, Crosby went back to Malkin for some reason, and Geno missed an empty cage from 3 feet out.

Yeah, that was terrible. You got to shoot there with Lundqvist moving, no matter if your name is Sid, Bobby or Bing Crosby.

Explain to me how the decision to play the 1-4 to sit on leads does not reflect at all on the coaching staff. This team does not have the personnel to play this system effectively.

The productivity of the top line and its effects on the other lines does not justify its existence.

Pens had more shots in a 5 minute OT then they did the entire 3rd period...I hate the fact that they feel they are good enough to sit on these leads.

A team that is missing its #1 defenseman has to take that into account before they go into a defensive shell...Go for the kill...1 goal, 2 goals it's not enough obviously...

All that said. No way MAF should have let that Zherdev shot in...

No team does. It's a flawed strategy.
