If Staal keeps playing like he has been...

Postby slipshod on Mon Oct 27, 2008 4:42 pm

Then I have no problem with him. But I wonder about his inconsistent 'drive' level. He always seems to play his best games against his brothers and he did play well in the playoffs but that just points out how much he doesn't 'bring it' every night in my opinion.

It could be that he will just take longer to mature than Crosby and Malkin.

What do you think? Will he always be inconsistent or will he mature into an everyday, every shift, force?

Yeah, no offense OP, but he's 19 (I guess he turned 20 last month?)...the fact that he's in his third full NHL season is as remarkable as it is unusual...he's gonna be fine...

This is like Fleury-syndrome all over again...we get spoiled by Crosby and Malkin being dominant from the get-go and think that every prospect will do the same...some people thought Fleury would be a bust, meanwhile, he's a top ten goalie in the league at an age when more than half of all goalies aren't even in the NHL yet...Staalsy just turned 20 about an hour ago and already has a ~30-goal under his belt...furthermore, he's in the power forward mold, they don't hit their prime until 25, 27, 29...so, if five years from now he shows no progress, then fine...but until then, Staal has been a gift for us in the grand scheme of things...

I think everyone needs to stop complaining about Staal right now. I think even more then that people need to stop making threads about Staal. He does seem to have stronger games vs his brothers though, or maybe thats because he was the 2nd line center and got the chance to play a bigger role.

Think about it.

You want players like this back on the 3rd line?

Learn to love Staal, and stop complaining and enjoy the talent while its here.

There will soon be a Staal on almost every team in the league at the rate they are breaking into the NHL, that can only be good for Jordan since he likes the competition.

Score.

He'll be fine. And as for the contract? If he feels he could be playing better than why the [insert favorite expletive] would he sign a contract that essentially says he's not as good as he thinks? Think about it. It's not selfishness, it's wanting to play to his full potential before he commits to a contract that in some ways dictates his roles and how he's perceived by all involved.

The thing that bugs me about Staal is his inconsistency, and I expect that snce he is only 20, but part of me just thinks that because he is so damn inconsistent, he is almost wasting a roster spot. Think of if he was still in juniors/AHL working on his game and came up in a year or two with all the skills he has now + more, but not costing us like he has done by not scoring. Its too late now that he's here, but prospects like that you probably want to keep in the AHL to develop, not try to develop them from the get go in the NHL.

If they can do as well as their replacement(Thomas at this point i'd guess) its better for them to be in the NHL. Besides he is the best option for his role in the organization anyway.

Agree. Stall has such an upside defensively that it does not make sense to have him working on the rest of his game(which he is still doing) and we are getting the benefits of having a good player in the defensive zone

The main reason I complain about Staal is that he could be such a freaking monster out there if he played with desire and more physicality every shift. When he starts throwing the body around in the offensive zone he is nearly unstoppable.

I'm not saying get rid of him at all. I hope he will develop into what he can be.

i wonder if Staal will end up being like "Jason Bay". As soon as he is traded and on another team and happier to play for them, he will end up being awesome and playing well.

Heh... that's exactly what I was scared of but had not thought of the Bay example.

I'm pretty sure he was awesome here in Pittsburgh (and by all accounts very happy), but he was mired in the incompetence that surrounds the Buccos... His reaction to the trade was "Wow" because he didn't expect to be traded. Plus, JBay got zero national attention because of the same thing, so anything he did good was only seen by those die-hard Pirates fans who pretend to care every season.

Yes... admittedly one of those fans... and I admit that JBay is tied for my favorite player with Jack Wilson...

Yeah, he didn't start playing better when he left, he started getting pitches because there was more than 1 MLB caliber player in the lineup.

I say trade him for a player with an offensive side while value is high before he is mired in 10 goal seasons for the rest of his career. A #1 pick is a little steep for a PK specialist.

I say Staal should be forced to give up his current nickname and have to take on one of two new ones, until he gets kicked into gear: Gup (Gives up puck), or Mtn, as in mountain (misses the net).

Maybe the Coyotes will call up Jared for Thursday so Jordan can have his breakout game.
