Going to Detroit next Tuesday

Postby Why Not Us on Tue Nov 04, 2008 6:19 pm

I've read bad reviews on the area around Joe Louis Arena. Anyone have recommendations of things to do before the game around the Arena or at least within a mile radius?

Any sign ideas? I'd imagine there's not much trash talking I as a Penguin fan could do to Wings fans.

Also, is anyone else from here making the trip?

When we went for Game 5, we ate at this place called the Hockeytown Cafe.

It's packed with Wings fans, but there's a lot of cool mementos in there, and the food's pretty good.

It's about a 10 minute walk from the Joe.

This will sound awful but I have a small part of me that wants to see some of the Wings injured...

I'm such a bad person

Hockeytown is way more than a 10 minute walk from the Joe. It's located over by Comerica Park and Ford field, a few miles away I'd say. It's not something you'll want to walk unless your in a large group. Take the people mover over instead, it'll drop you right of at the arena.

Might want to pack some heat to get out of there alive.

park at the greektown casino for free. take the people mover to the joe drops you off literally right outside the entrance for $1 or something like that round trip. so much easier and cheaper than parking outside of the joe. plus, this is much closer to hockeytown if you want to go there. there isn't much anything outside the joe so park at the greektown for free. the area outside the joe is nothing that bad, its like saying the hill district is bad outside the arena, well...just don't venture into that area and you'll be fine. the downtown area of detroit (the area around the casinos and all the new pro sports fields) is actually pretty decent. make sure you have gps if you are driving though because there are tons of highways and exits closed off.

I live about an hour from detroit, and have gone to a few shows downtown, but never a Wings game. Two things.

First, if you have an extra ticket lying around, I'd love to be your tour guide.

Second, in all seriousness, don't worry too much about it being "safe" unless you're alone. The areas near the sports arenas aren't too bad; especially with a sports crowd around. The idea to park at the casino is a good one, but I think they've been trying to prevent that lately. Also, the Public transport in detroit is really fickle. Be prepared to walk.

Yeah, because they'll be pretty dull, Obama's second term will be the one where he really gets stuff done.

I went for Game 1 last year. Stayed in the Holiday Inn Express. There was a bar in the same building, good food, adult beverages, and a shuttle to and from the Joe.
