You're entitled to your opinion. I'm not sure if a multi-year deal was necessary coming off major surgery, but maybe the market dictated Shero go 2 years?

Shero likes Eaton, that's the bottom line...

Sydor and Eaton will rotate as the 6th D man imo...

Until Whitney returns, I read somewhere that he has Dec 8 as his targeted return date...

Orpik, Whitney, Letang, Goligoski, Gil, Scuderi

There is your top-6 when Whitney returns.

Eaton was blocking shots like maniac in the latter part of the game last night.

When Whitney returns who do you think sits?

Orpik/Letang
Whitney/Scuderi
Gill/Eaton/Goligoski?

Do you think they will sit Eaton and Sydor? That's $4.5MM sitting in the press box right there...

It shouldn't be when you look at what other defenseman are signing for.

eaton had 1 or 2 bad games and the rest, you haven't even noticed him. he's more than fine as a 5-6 and he's fine at his price. jeez. like sydor was some sort of superstar last year.

Here's the lineup for Gonchar and Whitney returns

..when Whitney returns
Orpik - Letang
Scuderi - Whitney
Gill - Goligoski

...when Gonchar returns
Orpik - Letang
Scuderi - Gonchar
Goligoski - Whitney
Bench: Sydor - Gill - Eaton

Trade Gill and Sydor for draft picks or as part of a package to get a forward.

I doubt anyone will want Eaton plus I think Shero signed him in case they have a problem keeping Scuderi.

sydor was not a super star last year..but he has played more than fine this season. better than some (cought *eaton* cough). and your correct, eatons contract is small compared to most, but still too much for only playing 50 some odd games over 2 seasons and sucking once he has returned

eaton hasn't sucked this year. he had a couple bad games out of about 15. this wave of eaton bashing is a little short sighted.

Eaton was a solid signing by Shero. We already have two defensman down, who log a ton of minutes - and we almost lost Scuds to injury.

Last year in the finals, we almost needed to play Goligoski. (who is going to be a stud - but you don't to throw in someone that inexperienced in the finals!). Shero is making sure we have better options this year when (and not if) defensmen get injured.

I don't think it's fair to evaluate these things in hind site. Obviously, we knew Eaton was a risk, and Shero made a calculated one. Even though Eaton has turned out bad so far this season, does not mean it's a bad move. It's an expected value question.

Here for example, probability Eaton plays well or bad and his worth while playing at that level

Probability Eaton plays well = 75% = $3.2 Million
Probability Eaton plays bad = 25% = $1 Million

.75x2.9 + .25x1 = $2.425 Million

According to this example, anything below 2.425 (assuming Shero is risk neutral) is a good signing REGARDLESS of whether he actually plays poorly or not.

I am just throwing these number in there. All I'm trying to show is you can't look at signings as good or bad based simply on results. GMs, like everyone else, must make calculated risks.

How funny is it that this post is calling Eaton a bad signing and saying Sydor should be playing instead... a year ago, this thread gets made and says Sydor was a bad signing and asks why he's playing over someone else.

I thought Eaton was good last night. Nobody will have a problem with his contract next year when they see how much Scuderi and other defensemen get.

Eaton definitely played poorly for a while this year, but he looked good last night. I really feel like it was just a matter of time till he got confidence. The only thing I saw wrong with him prior to that was that he looked hesitant to go somewhere where he might get hit in a compromising situation.

He actually looked like he was laying some hits on some dudes last night. No glass shattering hits but he was certainly playing with more physicality than he has in the past.

The main reason Eaton is playing bad:

He changed his number to number 7.

I didn't mind siging Eaton to a 2 year deal... I did mind that it was for $2M a season though.

Shero was quoted in the paper that Eaton will be a top 4 d man for us again once he regains his health 100%...

Top 4 defenseman, what does that mean. Like top 4 of the bottom 4 of our defensive crops?

I'm going to be very upset if Scuderi leaves this team, he has been in a pens jersey since 1998. He deserves that 2 year 2 mill much more then Eaton right now.

Don't forget the man played with a finger that "exploded" last season. 30 years down the road someone will mention Scud and the only thing I'll remember about him is Errey describing the explosion. Mt's system alows Scuderi to be solid, which he surprisingly has been since last season. The system MT has implemented and built has molded a lot of our guys to be effective in roles. Another reason MT should be FIRED! Kidding of course :)

if 2 million per year is what it will take to get scuderi, shero will make it happen. eaton is very trade-able. but scuderi will get more from another team.

Am I completely off my rocker in thinking that if the current defense can hold the fort like they have been there could be a possibility that Gonchar may get shopped this coming offseason?

Don't get me wrong I love what Gonchar brings to the table but if our current block of young puck moving defenceman can do the job why carry the $5 million price tag of Gonchar when that salary can be used to fill a hole elsewhere.

I think Eaton will be retained for that option next summer.
