Good News on Staal's Contract

"C Jordan Staal's representatives and the Penguins are now cautiously optimistic of reaching a tentative agreement on a contract extension for the center, who can become a restricted free agent on July 1, 2009. Friends of Staal say he has conveyed to his agents a strong desire to sign a long-term deal - preferably soon. Staal's agent is scheduled to be in Pittsburgh on routine business this week"

He's on fire. I watched him in person last night, and he looked dominant. So dominant that this team has the best group of centers I've ever seen with Staal, Geno, Sid, and the Mantis!

I want him to stay

I'll take Lemieux - Francis -whatever as the best group of centers.

Just as long as it doesn't include a no-trade clause.

Anyone else notice Ziggy was on the ice for a bunch of Staal's point on the hat-trick night?

I don't think it's about who he plays with or what position he plays. It's just about confidence for him, it seems. People used to say he couldn't play center and had to be at wing, then this year they were saying he can't play wing. I don't think his position is the common denominator. It's his confidence. Ultimately, he's going to have to play top six minutes. They can't invest what they're going to invest in him to be a third liner. He needs more ES and PP time than being a third line center will allow.

That made me smile. Staal + Kennedy for the next two years after this one. Kennedy is signed to a two year extension. Those guys are really putting together some chemistry, and that like with Cooke has been amazing for us the past few games.

I really hope that the opening of this season has shown him that if they can keep this thing together that they can win a cup or 3.

This is nice to hear though;

Yeah, and Therrien generally seems to be able to find enough minutes for his best players to be effective, so no worries.

Staal gets his fair share of ice time and de coche puts him in all situations.

Like HH said, confidence is definitely Staal's biggest issue. When he's got it, he's great. When he's in a slump, he's in a SLUMP.

I love the Cooke/Staal/TK line :)

Point taken on the ice time. I still stand by my general statement that they can't pay him that much to be a third liner. If they have all that money invested in three centers, plus the defensemen they have, plus Fleury, they're going to have nothing left for wingers. For the investment locking up Staal will require, he's going to have to play a top six role. Of course, things will be fluid. Sometimes he'll be third line center. Sometimes he'll be a top two wing. Sometimes Malkin and Crosby will be paired and Staal will center the second line. I think he's going to have to be a wing the majority of the time, which isn't a problem. He's done well as a wing before.

But I guess we should see what his price tag ends up being. I'm expecting $4.5-$5 million per year...

depends. if you put staal with kennedy and cooke again next year, that could potentially be a 2nd line on many teams in the league (as we expect tk and staal improve). so if you give the "3rd" line 2nd line minutes, play the 4th line sparingly and put staal on the #1 PP, you get good enough value from staal. enough to justify 3.5-4 million/yr. and maybe a 30 and 35 season.

the only problem is that we may need kennedy and/or cooke to play on the top 2 lines next year since we only have like 1.5 wings signed for next year...leaving staal with the likes of dupuis and [insert WBS callup here]. in THAT case you're right. no, we cannot pay him to be a third liner.

I'm reserving my judgement. I'd like to see an extension for next year with an option to extend longterm after next season. It's just extremely hard to pass judgment on Staal at this stage in his career because of the inconsitancy and empty sweaterness... but on the other side, it's hard to not imagine Staal's value to another team, so do we sign based on the fact of peace of mind that we could easily move/trade/package him even if he isn't producing points. His potential and his age are his best attributes to another team.

He plays 3rd line here in Pittsburgh. He will have offnights based on the lone fact of his line is 3rd to the headcoach. Have to make sure A and A1 are happy wth their lines, so Staal will always see some sort of line changes. If he is in Pittsburgh's plans he must continue to do what he has been showing glimpses of the last few games. He must prove he can TAKE over the game by HIMSELF on his own line. A 5-6+ million defensive 3rd line center is not in the Pen's best interest. BUT maybe you do make the signing I guess based on knowing Staal's age and potential. His worth to a team needing a 1st or 2nd line center is far greater than that of a 3rd line shutdown center, so he's easily movable imo.

Ok, no coffee yet and this post probably made no sense..... no time to reread.
