Which old guy will we awkwardly part ways with next November

Postby NeddieVedder on Mon Nov 17, 2008 3:46 pm

2006 - John Leclair
2007 - Mark Recchi
2008 - Darryl Sydor

For '09, I'm thinking a time-traveling 37-year-old Angelo Esposito sent back from an alternate future.

Still, weird pattern. I'm looking forward to our annual 15-game unbeaten streak this January.

if things hold true, Mark Eaton is making a solid case this year.

We are slowly running out of "old guys"

Excluding Boucher, Gonchar is the next oldest guy on the team...

Right, lumping 31 year old Eaton in to the "old guys" is weird.

If Eaton is old then I need to re-assess my situation quickly...

I do not think that there was anything akward about this one. I think it was actually done with total class by both Shero (giving him a trade to a team he wanted to go to) and Sydor (never voicing negatives publically and still being a very positive leader in the room).

I agree. He was even on television with Paul and Errey the night before. He could have said anything he wanted that people would have then said was the reason they traded him. I was hoping he would get more ice time this year then Eaton, but I guess that was not in HCMT's plans.

Bullshizzle.

When I have surround sound on for the home games, his voice is as clear as day and it resonates throughout my house.

An old guy yet to be signed. Some veteran will be given a chance and or contract next fall.

I think the Pens are both past the point where they need older, veteran players to guide the youngsters, and you have to think Shero's gotten some good lessons on trying to count on 35+ guys. It's a young man's game in general these days, but older players especially have been consistently getting pushed aside for youth here.

I'm hoping the same... the veteran leadership is brought out by the players we already have. I don't see what bringing in another Roberts or Shannahan would do for this club to benefit them in the long run. You have to figure we will be bringing in middle aged (in the hockey sense) wingers for the top two lines who will all have experience, but if you look around the league, there are very few of the long time vets doing anything worth mentioning. Production is worth way more than a few locker room stories. Gonchar should be our oldest player next year.

Orpik and Whitney are more than ready to be the guides for the defense. Or at least will be by the time Gonchar is done. They are opposite ends of the defensive spectrum as well, so its nice to have those two as the likely top pair going forward.

EDIT: And to complete that thought. Malkin and Crosby are better motivation than any veteran they've had anyway.

Agree. I don't really see a "weird pattern". What happened with Sydor is pretty much everyday business.

Yup. He knew that he didn't fit in the organization anymore and had respectfully asked for a trade. He played hard when he got the chance and never did anything disrespectful. Good luck, Darryl.
