Has Staal surpassed Crosby as team's second best?

Postby Nizzy on Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:55 am

Jordan Staal has finally turned it on this season, he is only 20 years old and it's just taking him some time to grow into that body and learn how to use it to his advantages. Sure he will never have the moves and finesse Crosby does, but in today's NHL a bigger player like Staal with skill can be more unstoppable at times then a smaller quick type player like Sidney. We need to sign Staal right now before he puts up 40 goals and some dumb team like the predators or thrashers signs him a huge offer sheet. I know Crosby has won the MVP, but down the road 5-6 years Staal could end up being more dominate.

Last 7 Games:

Staal

Goals: 7
Points: 9
+/-: 7
1 Fight (sweet)

Crosby

Goals: 3
Points: 9
+/-: 2

Please note, I'm not entirely serious with this, it's definitley a joke thread related to the other one, but I still want to hear about what type of player Staal can develop into. In 5 season Staal will only be 25. He has so much time to play in the NHL and to get good, scary good. I think it's a huge mistake that he isn't signed yet. What you think Idoit40fans?

Good to hear. I do think that Staal will develop into an excellent player, but I sure hope Sid's development isn't finished either.

I don't think Staal will ever score 40 goals in one season.

in 5 seasons Sid will only be 26. And have one a ton of awards and will still be developing. I like Staal, but i do believe he will be a guy that gets traded down the road to help with cap issues.

Hurry and Trade Crosby to LA for Kopitar, Johnson, and Brown.

Quick, lets swap Crosby for AO, we need a scoring winger after all!!!

I am not knocking Staals play but 2 goals are empty net goals. Staal has been playing great, but Staal has been on fire and Crosby has been decent. This is Staal playing at a higher level then he ever has (yes he had the offensive numbers his rookie year, but this year he is all around good) while crosby is playing a only a decent level for himself. I think Crosby is hurt and might need to take a game or two off.

Until Staal shows some kind of consistancy I will keep being critical of his potential.

People are just crazy when it comes to Staal. He has a total poo year and they ignore that constantly talking about "29 goals 29 goals 20 goals". He then starts this year like poo. 12 games in he gets his first goal, an empty netter, and people started getting a chubby. Then he gets a hat trick a few games later and the $5M/yr birds start squacking again.

Yes, the kid has 6 goals and 2 assists in the last 5 games. However, he had only 1 goal and 3 assists in the previous 13.

OI bet when he fought yesterday there were a few tv screens that need cleaned off...

The biggest difference in how the two are currently playing is that one is 100% healthy and the other (IMO) is not. When in top form, Crosby is usually good for an explosive burst of speed around someone (or some other play) that makes you go "How the heck did he do that?" at least once per game.

I don't think that's happened more than a handful of times this season. I think he's got some kind of lingering issue eating at him.

I've never been aboard the Staal bandwagon, but I do think he'll be an above-average two-way player for a long time in this league. Barring injury though, I never see him being able to be more dominant than Crosby is at his best.

QFT. Sid just looks off. Geno is dominating the ice when he steps on it just like Sid used to. I don't know how to fix Sid, but maybe he should take a few games off. That said, the question becomes <100% Sid vs. No Sid and the extent of both options.

Is this a serious thread? Because Staal is no where near Crosby's level.

There are a lot of people and a lot of them are canadian who are not sold on crosby as the best player in the league. There is a feeling here in Pgh that he is but I think you would be surprised on how many don't think he is the best. It is a tough call but this year up to this point, he isn't.

He's in the top ten, but not the best so far I agree. But it's a long season and things usually change. Much like Malkin lit it up when the team needed him too last season when Sid was hurt. Still like having two of the top 10 on the Pens. Two players that are still hungry.

If Staal were to add some sandpaper to his game like he did the other night by dropping the gloves, and by just playing a more gritty game, he definitely has potential to be a top power forward in the game. Notice where he is playing in the offensive zone now vs early in the season. When he was slumping you never found him in front of the goal. Now he makes it his home and wants to get there more than the defender.
