Whitney has a cap hit of $4m for the next 4 years after this one. So I would try to find a team whose deep with wingers and has a winger who has a similar contract.

After looking over the rosters, Boston's Marco Sturm $3.5m stands out to me. He's on the 3rd line right now. 27g 29a last year. He has 2 years left on his contract after this season.

Whitney for Sturm, straight up.

Picks, mid level prospects...

That's really all I see..
Which is exactly why there'd be absolutely no point in trading Fedotenko. Just the notion of it is ridiculous.
Ridiculous is a little strong. If someone values Fedotenko more then the pens, he could easily be moved...
But for what? Certainly if they're going to move a wing, they need to be getting a wing in return. I can't imagine any team that has a winger better than Fedotenko that would be dumb enough to trade said winger for Fedotenko.
What about Fedotenko and Eaton for winger then?

It's difficult to move guys on one year deals for nothing, trying to use them to upgrade a multi-player trade doesn't usually help unless said player is a superstar or star rental. In fact sometimes it does the opposite of help.

Rumor here on the street in Columbus is the Blue Jackets are trying to trade for Whitney.

I doubt Columbus will be trading Rick Nash or Brassard anytime soon, so, um. No.

You'd think people would take so much trade interest in Whitney as a sign.

I'll bet lots of teams are interested in Whitney, he's a high upside guy on an affordable contract. The real question is, is Shero willing to trade Whitney. Again, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zNjQecyjE8

Honestly, I don't like the idea of moving Whitney while he's signed to such a bargain contract. Same with Gonchar.

This is all a byproduct of the Penguins having a deep defensive corps for the first time in...well....EVAAAAAAR.

Unless some kind of miracle occurs (i.e. a 40 goal winger develops out of Wilkes-Barre), one of the above is going to be used as trade bait.

Edit: Spelling FTW

Just noticed your new location...

I don't see RS doing anything at the deadline that might weaken the club for the playoffs, so it would have to be a wash at least for this year. That probably means some guys about to be UFA like Gill, Sykora, Fedo, Satan, Scuderi may not get moved because no GM is likely to give up much except a middling pick or a 2nd or 3rd tier guy also about to become UFA.

I can see a minor deal or two for not-too-high draft picks. Farm needs some re-stocking anyway and Pens are likely to have a real surplus at D, assuming no further injuries.

Lot can happen between now and the deadline and the Pens very well may need a winger or two. Next year, it's really up in the air as far as which present wingers will be back and who may not be.
