Positive Thread for this Season

Postby Tybrus on Fri Nov 21, 2008 1:00 pm

Okay, I have been back to the board fairly often for the last few weeks after a brutal semester in college, a pretty awful workplace (Subway fyi), and a loss in my family in October, and I come to read the board and revel in the glory of the Pens, but all I see are negative threads. So I purpose that we have an overall, positive thread. No negativity!

Reason to be positive:
1. Through 19 games, the Penguins are 4th in the East and 2nd in the Atlantic. The Rangers are 1st in both, but are only 3 points ahead having played 3 more games. Meaning that we WILL surpass them and be 1st in the East by the end of the season.

2. All of this has been achieved without the top 2 defensemen in term of point production and their roles on the PP (which by the way hasn't bottom out at 19.1%).

3. Geno and Sid are 1st and 3rd in points, despite lower powerplay production than was to be expected.

4. Defense and goaltending have become a strong point on this team. When was the last time anyone here could say that?

5. Sabu is playing absolutely on his head. GAA 1.59 Save Percentage .940 Those are numbers that MAF was putting up last year in the huge run of points that the team had.

6. Didn't we make it to the Stanley Cup Finals last year? Did I dream that?

So, before everyone starts screaming to trade Letang and Goligoski, that Malkin is better than Crosby, or that Jordan Staal is a complete bust, remember that this team is in a perfect position to win the East, that by the end of the year the PP will be back in the above 20%, MT will have his lines set for the playoffs, and this team will be crushing people.

Just like your mom always told you, post some more reasons to be positive about the season to date or don't post at all.

The Pens are actually fourth in the entire league by point percentage. This is one of the best starts in franchise history and I still get the feeling that the team has another gear. I don't see them losing a whole lot this year. I predicted President's Trophy before the season and I'm thinking it's a pretty strong possibility.

I liked your post, agree with everything you said, but you left out people screaming for a scoring winger.

Scoring winger. How could I forget that it has been going on here since I joined...I guess maybe I am desensitized to that

If Whitney and Gonchar come back 100 percent healthy the Pens are going to be nearly impossible to beat in a 7 game series in the East.

Can I still want a scoring winger? I won't scream for one. Please?

Please is a good start. Also, you get bonus points for using punctuation marks. So, the hockey gods may consider your request.

I want a scoring winger for Sid too, I just don't understand how people are willing to give up so much in other areas. Satan is on pace for 36 goals and 68 points right now. Which is not terrible IMO.

Huge improvements on face-offs... what can mike lange complain about? :P
They are still finding their line chemistry, but have a winning record despite many different ones.

Many looking at them with the departure of cup game six players to fail...they haven't !

The Pens aren't playing their best hockey, but they are on a 7-0-1 tear through the month of November beating St. Louis, Edmonton, the Isles, Detroit, Philly, Buffalo, and Atlanta and losing to Minny in a SO. Once Whitney and Gonch come back it could be very messy for the NHL. They've gotten off to a much better start against the division than last year, going 3-0-2 in the first 5 divsion contests (0-0-1 vs. NJ and NYR, 1-0-0 vs. NYI, 2-0-0 vs. PHI).

I don't care for Stuart, myself. I think he has too high an opinion of himself.

Thank you for a positive thread. Once in a while it gets easy to lose sight of the forest for the trees.

And by trees I mean those huge thighs of Jordan Staal.

kudos to you for staying positive.

I have not been thrilled by how they have got to where they are (compared to the dominance of last year's playoffs), but the factors they have had to deal with are quite high.

injuries
SCF letdown
loss of players
new players
overseas adventure
slumps
trade of Sydor
jimmerson's record
racchi's rug
etc etc etc

There is an old saying...."You can't argue with success." I would ammend to that, unless it is on LGP.com

Gonchar would return instantly, Jacques Lemaire would be banned from hockey forever, the Flyers would move to Quebec, and Sean Avery's lips would be stapled shut.
