Pens aren't likely to have much cap space to work with unless they move some salary so there isn't a lot of room for speculation.

Pretty much. . .

expect the Pens to sign some bargain bin d-men and wingers next year, while retaining their guys.

Guys of note:

Forwards:
Steve Sullivan- missed all of last season with a back injury, could miss all of this season. He's a good goal scorer, and if he can make a recovery, he would be an interesting camp invite to say the least if the Pens are still looking to fill a top 6 spot and don't want to automatically give it to a WBS guy.

Ales Kotalik & Maxim Afinogenov- Both young, both not on the top tier of wingers available. Both of them would be preferable over our current guys, but would also probably be more expensive.

Michel Ouellet- knows the system, would be super cheap, stop gap until Caputi, Jeffrey, Veilleux, CPZ, or Moon can crack the top 6/9

Defensemen:

Greg Zanon- gritty 6th/7th guy- could be cheaper than Scuderi/Gill
Francois Bouillon- fast and gritty guy for the bottom pairing- probably about the same prices as Scuderi/Gill

Which current guys? If you mean Satan and Sykora, I couldn't disagree more. Afinogenov has one goal in 18 games this season after scoring just 10 in 56 last year, plus he's in Ruff's dog house now. Kotalik has had seasons of 38 and 43 points the last two years and is on a similar pace this year. They're worse than the Pens' current top two wingers and better not be more expensive.

I'm not that big on what's out there this summer. I hope the Pens can bring back one of Sykora and Satan - there's no way they could bring back both unless they move salary, meaning Gonchar or Whitney. I'd rather just see Kennedy get moved up to the second line than waste time and money on Afinogenov, Kotalik, or Ouellet.

Yep he's an RFA, and not a piece this team is going to need.

Colby back on the Pens = step backwards.

Signing him means the Penguins organization is going in the wrong direction.

He's not ideal, but have you looked at the Pens cap situation next summer?

42.5
+ 1.5 Talbot = 44
+ 3.5 Staal = 47.5 (that's probably an underestimation)
+ 2.5 Goligoski = 50 (also probably an underestimation)
+ .75 Zigomanis = 50.75
+ 1 7th d-man = 51.75

and the cap is supposed to be 55 million. If they don't trade anyone, that leaves very little for wingers. And even if they traded Gonchar, they'd still need to fill 3 spots, and that money would be spread pretty thin between them, if getting Ouellet would allow them to get Kotalik or someone like that, I'd be all for it.

Afinogenov was wrecked by an injury last year and hasn't gained back all of his super speed yet and has not been getting top line minutes that he did when he put up much better numbers.

Maxim could be an amazing winger on Geno's side though. DO IT.

Afinogenov isn't getting top minutes because he got himself into Ruff's dog house and has been demoted. One goal in 18 games is crap no matter what line you're on when you have his talent.

The cap situation is going to suck as things are currently situated. Noise's estimates are pretty conservative but the gist of it is pretty much the reality - they'll be around $52 million with three forward spots to fill with a cap that allegedly might only be $55 million. They're either going to have to resign themselves to having third line wingers on all the lines or they're going to have to make a big move, either getting rid of Gonchar's contract or moving Whitney for a young winger at a similar price point. I've always been against trading Whitney, but it might be the only way they can put out a championship-caliber team next year. Long-term, the D would still be fine with Orpik, Goligoski, and Letang all eventually locked up, plus a few solid prospects still in the pipe line. I don't know, maybe Whitney for Bobby Ryan this summer? Just throwing that out there.

Well with almost all of Anaheim's defensemen going UFA this summer, that could make a lot of sense.

Only if you're signing him with high expectations. If you're signing him as a 3rd/4th line guy at that price range, he's a fine signing.

ZETTERBERG- too expensive
FRANZEN- too expensive
AFINOGENOV- Henry Hank pointed out his deficiencies, but if he could be signed cheap, he'd provide an extra option
MILLER- goaltender
KOTALIK- maybe
KOMISAREK- he's a d-man/don't need him
HAVLAT- too injury prone, he'd have to sign really cheap, too expensive
SULLIVAN- if he can make a come back from his back injury and sign cheap (less than 1.5 because of inherent risk) it'd be an interesting possibility
MCDONALD- Interesting possibility
GIONTA- too expensive
CAMMALLERI- too expensive
TANGUAY- maybe, but I'd rather not
GABORIK- injury prone, too expensive
HORCOFF- possibly
SEDIN X 2- too expensive

As for Colby, if they were to sign him to a contract where no compensation was required and Atlanta didn't match, that'd be cool, a Cooke-Staal-Armstrong checking line would be pretty neat.

I'd go for Franzen. He's the type of guy Sid needs on that line to create traffic to the net, and score some goals. They'll save $6m losing Satan/Fedotenko and I think he'd be a significant upgrade over both of those two. Not sure how much money he's looking to get.

Also, don't forget to throw Hossa  in for 09' as well.
