Zigomanis/O'Brien Incident

Postby netwolf on Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:31 pm

That was a pretty ugly way to end the game yesterday. You don't see that kind of garbage anymore, and the league is better for it. I think it's worthy of a game (or three) suspension for both guys, though I don't believe the league will take any further action. Intentional hatchet jobs like that don't belong in the sport IMO, and should be dealt with harshly. I don't think handing out penalties after a game is over sends a strong enough message.

As long as the league insists on trotting out these clueless buffoons to call a game completely different from period to period, let alone game to game, these incidents are going to happen. The league has no one to blame but themselves.

I don't think it was shown on tv.

So how can anybody say whether they deserve a suspension?

They saw it at the game? Plus dual slashing calls that late in the game should probably warrant suspension regardless.

It's tough to judge something suspension worthy based on one viewing.

From what I hear it was a pretty viscous 2-handed slash. If this is true I don't need a video to tell me that suspensions are necessary.

Like I said, that late in a game, when 2 players go after each other enough to get slashing penalties, it should probably warrant suspension regardless. And the fact that it wasn't shown on tv doesn't equal it not being on tape. The odds of it not being picked up by a camera are very slim.

I hit stop and delete on the DVR immediatly after they put in the empty netter.

Saw it in the box score though.

To me, it really didn't look like that big of a deal. emotions were high and they just started slashing each other. I know the NHL has to protect it's players, but I see tomahawk chops like that many times in hockey, too many times for me to think it warrants a suspension in the NHL.

I'm sure it's on tape somewhere. It's hard to say whether it warrants a suspension without seeing it though.

If they are suspended and it was caught on tape, then the tape will have to be released to the public.

There will be no suspension.

Sportsnet showed it and O'Brien sort of speared him, nothing major, but Ziggy gave O'Brien a Two hand baseball swing to the arm. O'Brien actually grabbed his arm.

so there was one spear and one swing? or did they go at it more?

o'brien grabbed his own arm in pain?

I was there and saw Ziggy slash the other guy. It looked like frustration, nothing major. The penalties they received were enough imho.

I have to agree with Netwolf here. That was an ugly scene for sure. I was at the opposite end of the ice so I didn't have a close up view, but, it certainly looked pretty intense. Swing, spear/swing, swing, swing if what I remember. The time of game and the way the sticks were used warrant a suspension in my book. My book (and every other rational person's) is a lot different than Colin Campbell's, though.

I was in c13, basically it was right in front of me. It was absolutely, positively NOTHING. Just two guys who gave each other little swats on the pants leg, followed by two or three chops back and forth - stick on stick. The sticks never came above the waist.

Come on folks, these are hockey players. The PC stuff is getting ridiculous.

I was looking down from E18, and I agree with this assessment. It looked to me like two kids "swordfighting" with their sticks. I don't remember any spears or two-hand swings or anything like that. They cut it out as soon as the linesman skated over. It certainly didn't strike me as anything worthy of more than two minutes for slashing.

Snapper, we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I don't think two-handing someone (regardless of where it lands) has a place in the game, and I don't think having that opinion has anything to do with political correctness.
