Official reason Cooke was tossed?

Postby DelPen on Mon Nov 24, 2008 2:04 pm

I never saw the official reason why he was thrown out.

I thought because of this rule below, because Oprik and Burrows I guess was the "original altercation".

A game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on any player who is assessed a major penalty for fighting after the original altercation.

That's what Errey said. Rule 47.7 if you're keeping score.

I would expect then that Cooke's penalty would have been listed last at that time instead of first?

I was aware of that rule while watching all of that go down on Saturday and was waiting to see who would get tossed. The only confusion I had was how they decided to let Kesler and Kennedy stay in the game by giving them each double-minors for roughing, but ringing up Hansen and Cooke for fighting majors and sending them to the showers. Both altercations occurred after Burrows and Orpik got started, and both seemed to have the same level of "involvement." Maybe it was just a case of the officials making sure another flare-up didn't happen later in the game, I don't know.

I don't know there is ever any rhyme or reason to the order the penalties appear listed in a box score or on a score sheet...

Gives new meaning to the term "tossing your cookies".

I think it was because the linesmen had to intervene with Hansen and Cooke, while Kennedy and Kesler parted at the order of the Ref. That is my guess, because Kennedy definitely threw a few punches. I guess because they heeded his warning (probably yelling to them that they were gone if they didn't stop), they were spared and that left Cooke in the lurch.

The problem I have with this is that Cooke was basically the first fight. They were chasing him all over the ice. Even if Orpik and Burrowes were technically the first altercation, it was obvious to anyone with eyes what was going on. They were after Cooke. The Pens ended up with a power play out of it, as they should have, but the refs got the right end result with the wrong reason. That's what MT thought, too, as he was yelling, "that makes no f'ing sense."

Must be a regular season only rule.

If that happened in the playoffs, there would be hell to pay by the NHL.

Matt Cooke's ex teammates nor coach are thrilled with the hit from Saturday. But all saying it helped team chemistry. Tyler Kennedy and whoever appeared to be the 3rd scrum, after Brooks & his partner began fighting...chaotic start.

How do the Vancouver reporters get word on their goalie, they get it from Luongo's agent. Then, he was backtracking on his 4-5 weeks comment.
I imagine you cannot ignore the legions of fans nor reporters in Canada.

I don't know there is ever any rhyme or reason for how some ref's call the game

^ This. Which is a shame, because the inconsistent officiating is the most frustrating thing about the league.

They should have called that 3rd man in. Cooke was lining up to fight Burrows and Hanson jumped in.

It was obvious the calls were made to keep the game in control. Refs found a way within the rules to eject Cooke... they probably wished they had called his hit as an initial penalty and mitigated the blowup a little.

Please, the offical reason why Cooke was tossed is because he ate all the ref's Oreos before the game and the Ref was paying him pack. End of Story
