Give Malkin the 'A'.

Postby DontToewsMeBro on Thu Nov 27, 2008 3:49 pm

Permanently. He is ready for it. Gill and Scuderi are good team players and all, but Malkin's leadership is on a whole different level. To keep this topic kind of current...who gets the 'A's next? Kennedy and Staal? :D

i dont think either kennedy or staal carry enough presence in the locker room worthy of an A.. but if i had to pick iwouldnt be surprised if it was talbot if he doesnt miss much time, and maybe sykora

But for the sake of arguement.. a player can be a leader without wearing an A, it isnt nearly as important as the C.. I can guarantee that everyone in that locker room realizes Malkin is a leader now, whether he can talk to the refs or not.

Probably because of the language barrier, Geno was a bit of a mystery to me, but now he has really grown in my eyes as far as character and team leadership goes. I'm cool with him getting a permanent A once he is a little more comfortable with the English, though he's doing much better now.

I'm partial to Talbot and Brooksie for the permanent A as well.

Crosby - C
Malkin - A
Orpik - A

When Gonch comes back:

Crosby - C
Malkin - A
Gonchar - A

Fans do not determine the captaincy of a hockey team.

Obviously. But fans do have a right to discuss who should be captain and who shouldn't.

I suppose. Fans also have a right to discuss things that they have no hope of understanding. I guess this is one of them.

I can't help but chuckle a little when I hear fans say who is or isn't a leader in the locker room and stuff like that. We just don't know. We really don't have any ground to stand on when second guessing these alternate captaincy decisions. It's extremely obvious to every one that Crosby is the captain of this team for a variety of reasons. The alternates aren't going to be clear to us. I think Malkin will be a permanent by the end of the year, but they'll probably cycle through other guys throughout the regular season first. I'm guessing we'll see A's on Staal, Talbot, Cooke, Dupuis, Whitney and others in these next months.

I expected Max to get one of the A's for December. His injury was some bad timing though. I honestly have no idea who MT will pick for next months alternates. Maybe Sykora and Cooke? We just can't tell who the leaders are. Either way though, it's only a matter of time before Malkin gets the A fulltime.

Malkin deserves an A with the way he plays and the strides he's taken to learn the language this year.

The more pressure 71 has on him, the better he plays.

I think Orpik should have the other A however.

Talbot should be another person for consideration (while Gonchar is out).

I don't think they really need to have home/away alternates. They should just give 2 people A's and then leave it at that.

But there are so many worthy candidates.

Malkin
Orpik

at home

and....

Talbot
Scuderi

on the road.

That would be good for me. And then Gonch takes a permanent from someone when he gets back.

Yeah I'd definitely think Orpik should have an A till Gonchar gets back. Especially assuming they will be paired together, it gets very redundant.

this.

Orpik shows a lot of leadership on the ice. He's the clear leader on defense with whitney and gonchar out.

It is just a letter, doesn't mean anything other than to talk to the refs.

As Hans said in Mighty Ducks 3, "C's are just letters, here I have hundreds of them."

I really don't think the As matter. All they really do is allow the player to interact with the refs. The players know who the leaders are on the team. A letter sewn on your shoulder doesn't change how your team looks at you if you are a good leader.
