Shanahan

Postby NJ5934 on Fri Nov 28, 2008 11:51 pm

I was against the idea this summer but I'm starting to wonder whether Shanahan might be exactly what this team needs. These routine third period collapses have me thinking alittle leadership may be a good thing. A big body with experience couldn't hurt the PP at this point either.

Shanny in the twillight of his career can't be any worse than Dupuis or Fedotenko are on Sid's wing.

I have yet to see an intelligent hockey transaction that was justified with "it can't be any worse". Just sayin'.

no. no. no.

Is it a coincidence no team has signed him yet? No. Every team sees exactly the same thing. An older, slower guy who ran out of gas when he was needed most.

I don't think Shanny would work well with Crosby. It seems like you have to be a slightly above average skater or better in order to have a shot at clicking with him. Shanny still has value to an NHL team and he might even be able to help this one, but it's not as Crosby's winger.

I'm against signing him though as I believe that while he could be effective taking a 4th line shift and being a gunner on the power play, the coaching staff would give him a larger role than what he could adequately fill.

Our pp needs a fixing now, but if adding a winger, it needs to be someone who can contribute even strength down the stretch. We already have Satan and Sykora as "PP specialists" doing little on the wing at ES.

Our problem is we do not have one top six winger on this squad. Dupius is playing on our first line. Every other team in the NHL has better talent at wing then the penguins. Every one

When you are as deep as the Pens are at center and defense (especially once Whitney and Gonchar come back), other parts of your roster are going to suffer for it.

You know, I was thinking that what the Penguins really need is a guy nearing retirement who skates like the wind...the wind on the moon, that is.

I'd pick up Shanny and not let him play anytime but the power play where he would stand in front of the net. We don't have anyone that can do that anymore.

Leadership would be a good thing. Some defensemen who can transition the puck consistently would be better. I don't think Shanny can do that. It will be nice to see the team when Whitney and then Gonchar come back.

Shanahan is the answer for this team, have you ever seen him try to play defense and move the puck? No way to know that he can't do it if you give him a few games to get used to it.

Hire Shanny!

Where did the notion that this team lacks leadership come from? It seriously comes up every time trades or signings come up that we need "veteran leadership." What is it exactly that people are seeing that makes them say, "Wow, our team is really hurting for some leadership... if we just had players who can't contribute on the scoreboard but could lead this team, we'd be in great shape."?

I think it is time to revist this. This team needs a veteran leader, I don't care if Shanny just comes in for 4th line minutes, he would be good to have around. He would also provide some much needed grit.

If the penguins were really considering bring onboard a 40+ year old powerplay specialist with leadership skills, to play limited minutes a game, I'm pretty sure we have one of those up in the owner's box.

I don't think it will happen.

Now if we could pry Petr Prucha away from NY, then I'd be down with him on Sid's wing.

I personally wouldn't mind bringing in Brendan Shanahan. This team needs a change, somewhere, somehow. And Shanahan can add grit, physicality, and he is a good PP guy -- whether he is taking shots from the point or is put in front of the net. And what would it cost now to get him, around 700K, 800K? I would certainly look into it, no question.

The reason no team has signed him yet is because he's not willing to go just anywhere. The few places he wants to go have no interest in him apparently, but that doesn't mean that nobody would take him.
