Malkin and Crosby 1 & 2 in Leaders in Scoring

Postby Maagwa on Sat Nov 29, 2008 2:15 pm

How awesome is that? Malkin has 27 Assists which he leads the league in, and 10 goals. Crosby has 10 Goals and 20 Assists. Were Mario and JJ ever like this?

Yes. They were 1-2 in 95-96 while Francis was 4th. It would still be an amazing accomplishment though.

Not only were they 1-2, they just blew away the reast of the league. Lemieux with 161, Jagr 149, and Sakic 3rd with 120. Francis finished with 119.

Sid and Geno will go down as the 2nd and 3rd best players in Pens history.

They will both go down as top 20 players in NHL history.

Had he played the full schedule, Mario would have had approximately 188 points.

That's an insane number for that era.

To put things in perspective, there are several players tied with Crosby for 2nd:

AO, Simon Gagne, and Marc Savard are all tied with Sid right now.

Sorry if I took the jam out of anyone's doughnut. :D Of course, if Sid and Malkin keep tearing things up, they should continue to separate themselves.

Looks to be a good, long race. This year, want everybody healthy.

*Sidney leads the pens with shots~ 81 And don't look now, but he has tied Evgeni with 10 goals.

If he had a stick with a bigger curve, he's have 20 by now.

And if he didn't defer on so many shots and pass all the time, he'd have like 300 shots by now.

Re: Malkin and Crosby 1 & 2 in Leaders in Scoring

Postby Stan Potash on Sat Nov 29, 2008 7:46 pm

I personally think Malkin has the potential to regularly score more points per season than Crosby, but I don't necessarily think that makes him the better all around player just yet. I think that more often than not, he'll just end up with more points than Sid. I could be wrong and it wouldn't matter to me either way. We'll have to wait and see. But I don't really agree with the sentiment that Malkin and Crosby will pull away in the scoring race. They are not Mario and Jagr in that they are not truly dominant and superior to their peers. Ovechkin is an unbelievable talent- like him or not (and I don't)- and he's just got a knack for scoring (and scoring... and scoring). Semin looks like he's also going to be a legitimate force for the rest of his career.
The gap between them is not that big.

I'm not saying Geno and Sid aren't great players. They are great, great players and they'll both end up in the hall of fame if they stay healthy. I'm thrilled that they're both on our favorite team. They just aren't head and shoulders above the competition like Gretzky or Lemieux were when they played. THAT was scary and kind of unfair.

Which brings up an interesting question: Were Gretzky and Lemieux actually that much better than Sid, Malkin, AO, etc, or were they just that much better than their competition at the time? I think most would have to agree that the skill level of the competition wasn't as refined as it is now. But does that mean it's more or less impressive that Gretzky and Lemieux were able to excel the way they did? After all, they were using the same equipment as their competition. Stick AO on the Islanders in 1983 and see how many goals he'd score. That would be amazing to see.

Note: This is not a 99 vs 66 post.
Note: I'm 28. I am actually old enough to have seen most of Gretzky's career and all of Mario's career.
Note: I've been previously drinking a little bit.
Note: Where is Slim Eddie?
