Scudill Worst defensive pairing in the NHL

Postby Maagwa on Sat Dec 06, 2008 5:40 pm

I'll say it. Hal Gill is the worst defenseman the Pens have. If I wasn't using a Iphone I'd say more.

He may be the worst defenseman in the NHL. What a pathetic piece of crap. Talk about a complete 180 from last June.

Hmm...Sounds like something I said about two weeks ago when everybody was whipping on Eaton as the worst dman to ever grace the ice. Gill is terrible. He was not even close to this bad last season, but it appears he has returned to his Maple Leaf form or didn't condition in the offseason. He needs to be sat. Now. Bring up Richmond, Lovejoy, or Biss until Boucher gets better.

Hal Gill is Therrien's new Michel Ouellet. He friggin loves the clown that is Hal Gill. Get him out of here.

I agree that Gill hasn't been too great this year, although, he was pretty damn good for us in the playoffs last year. That's in the past though. Get rid of the beast.

First off Boucher isn't playing because he's hurt.

Pairing Gill and Scuderi doesn't work that well IMO (at least at even strength), because they have the same weaknesses; neither skates or passes all that well. Pair each one with someone that does do those things well, and Gill and Scuderi will both be better for it.

And I hate you all for making me post something that's even close to defending Hal Gill. :P

Hal Gill paired up with anyone is not going to work out. He is our version of Derian Hatcher without the nastiness and physicality. You are seriously better off just putting a broken hockey stick out there instead of Gill.

At this point, I wouldn't mind putting an injured Philippe Boucher in, over a 100% Hal Gill.

God, he sucks so hardcore. So soft for 6.7 250 pounder. He's like a pillow.

If Therrien has a brain, he will sit this guy the moment Boucher is healthy or when Whits is ready to come back. Whichever one comes first. Mark Eaton needs to stay in the lineup. He has played very well since he's been re-inserted into the lineup.

I would love to see Gill back with Letang. Last season when they were together they were a good pairing. Since MT switched it up in the 2nd round of the playoffs, he has never put them back together. Makes no sense. Especially when you start the game off with Geno, Sid and Sykora along with Scuds and Gill? WTF? you obviously want the firepower out there, why not put a puck moving Dman out there with them?

Gill looked great last year because he was teamed with Letang, and even though Letang's defensive prowess isn't close to where it is now his speed made up for all the inefficiencies that Gill possesses. They were a perfect compliment; Letang chases, Gill stays at home. I wouldn't mind seeing them try it again because as it stands now they're putting all their speed on defense on the Letang/Orpik pairing. Gill's game has a place on this team, but with his and Scuds speed being... lacking, they shouldn't be together.

Oh, and it may also be neither here nor there, but I thought Goligoski had a far worse game than Gill.

Gill played very well in the playoffs last season. His play this season is more like he played in Toronto and Boston. He isn’t a top 4 Dman. The Pens still need him for the PK. Gill is so large and slow that his mistakes are obvious to even casual fans. Orpik probably made the worst error from the Dmen today when he chased Alfie behind the Pens net on the Sens 2nd goal for an unnecessary hit. Letang was already engaged with Alfie and Orpik abandoned the slot. Letang tried to rotate back into the slot but he was too late.

This. Other d-men made far more costly errors than did Gill.

I couldn't agree more. I hate the "Scudill." I liked Scuds with Whitney and Letang with Gill. MT claimed that he changed it so one didn't overly rely on the other for offensive play or vice versa. I see his point but I still don't like it, and it's the exact opposite of what you're suggesting.

It's no secret that in the last few games, Scudill was on the ice when the Pens were stuck in their own end.

I'd rather have Boucher... but for now we'll live with Gill...

he is not THAT terrible. come on now. hes having a bad start sure. but id rather have him out there than an AHL prospect. we have enough of those. Let it work itself out and so be it.

Yea but unfortunately that means Eaton will sit or Gogo will get sent down. I don't think MT will sit Gill anytime soon.
