Whitney and Talbot for Horton??

Why would we have to sweeten the deal? Imo, they are looking to dump him correct? I would think they would have to sweeten the deal for a Whitney. Potential vs potential, you pay more for defense it seems nowadays. Just my two cents.

Which is why I'm saying Gogo + a mid level pick and somebody like Fedotenko for Horton.

Why? Assuming he comes back healthy, Whitney would have a lot more trade value around the league than Horton would, so I don't see why the Pens would have to overpay for a trade in this situation.

Like I said before, Pens can't even begin to think about moving Whitney until they know that Gonchar isn't showing any ill-effects from his injury.
Even if Gonchar does come back healthy, who would you rather have a mid 30's d-man who is only signed for one more year, or Whitney who will be 26 later this year and is signed for the next 5 years at a reasonable cap hit. I understand that Whitney has more trade value, and that Gonchar has a NTC, but you are making a big assumption that Letang and/or Goligoski is going to make up the offense that you lose in Whitney.

Well I'm definitely in the "Whitney probably shouldn't be traded unless it's a reDICulous offer" camp. I was just saying to anyone who is advocating this trade or looking for Whitney to be moved, none of that can be done unless the Pens are sure that Gonchar has a full recovery and a few more solid years of playing left.

Personally, I would think that Horton has more value league wide then Whitney. Horton is a young, established power forward, locked up for another 5 years or something...If it's Whitney for Horton straight up then I think the pens would have to pull the trigger on that deal...

I tend to agree. Although I can't think of one good reason why Florida would trade Horton, so I think this is just Garrioch making more stuff up.

I think that Offensive Dmen are becoming more and more valuable league-wide in the "new" NHL though, so. Whitney is also locked up long-term at a reasonable price.

I do not watch a lot of teams, I admit, around the league unless they are on my regular $150 comcast tripple play package. But when you say Horton is proven are you actually witness to the stats? Or could he be a product like Malone comes to mind. Malone was worth no where near what he got imo, to me he was a product of Malkin and a superior PP. In my eyes, although Whitney has been inconsitant and God knows I've bashed the everloving crap out of him, and got Mark Madden's panties in a bunch over one of my topics started..... I still think Whitney is still proven in the terms of a young career. We're talking about a DMAN who took helped take this team to playoffs two years in a row with his exceptional heads-up breakout passing. In the league of crappy Detroit/New Jersey netutral zone interference Whitney's potential to setup the huge play is more valuable to me than the winger who puts it in. The play needs to start. The best two acquistions this team will have is when we get our #1 and #2 dmen back. My mind drools at the thought of completely skipping the neutral zone in 1 quick pass again.

You can always get better, do you think Fedetanko and Satan make up for the loss of Hossa and Malone. We cake walked to the finals ladt year dominated the 1st 3 rounds. This team isn;t as strong. We will have a influx of defencemen at the trade deadline and decisions will have to be made. There are players that will be availible that can improve us we have to keep our eyes open. Staal Whitney Letang, i would "shop" these guys around for someone who i know still have a couple years left on their contract and who can play a vital position we are in need of. Of course the Staal contract situation would be something i wold watch closely, we can't risk to losing him for nothing.

I hear what you're saying. But worst case scenario for us with Staal is someone offers him a big offer sheet and the pens take the picks...If the pens did that then the offer sheet would have to be very substantial, therefore the picks being sent back would be substantial...

Letang makes under 1 million next year.

It'd be silly to part with him now when the Pens are going to be completely cap crunched next year and depleted of their defensive depth.

Letang is still getting paided 1 Million per year for his entry level, however his cap hit is higher then 1 Million. If there is anyone I can see be moved at the deadline it would be GoGo. I love watching him too, but there is just no way the Pens can have all 3 signed (Letang, GoGo, Gonchar) after 09-10 if Oprik/Whitney are still here.

Its. Just. Not. Possible.

Even more impossible if Staal/Talbot/Sykora get signed. One of those 3 d-man has to go.

Would take Whitney+Staal+Feds/Satan/Eaton/Gill to balance cap wise.

Yes. Because Florida is doing so well with their batch of players, and the Pens aren't with theirs, so obviously they should trade them to try to change their fortunes..?

If RS was able to pull this off the Pens would be instantly dominant. If both guys are available from Florida then I would go after both. I could take losing Staal, Whitney + a player/pick for that.
